For mostly all road use a 650ish would be nice if you want it to be comfy on the freeway. The BMW F650 thumper is fairly short and can go shorter still as is the DR650SE. The BMW is the more road oriented of the two, but the DR is a bit lighter which she may appreciate.

For road use though I'd skip the thumper and get an actual road bike - smoother, more stable and usually lower to the ground. Something like a ER6N or even Ninja or CBR250 would be quite nice.

Does it need to be a dual sport? What's she going to do with it? How fast does she need to go? What's her riding experience?

For the road, you really can't beat a Ninja 250. If she wants to tour on road, the F650 bmws get awesome gas mileage. I love the Xcountry I borrowed briefly (the 09's are shorter btw). I also had a lowered SV650 but thought it fairly heavy feeling.

for dual sporting, the XT225 is a great little beastie. along with all the other simliar bikes. I'm currently in love with my KLX250. If you wanted something bigger, I keep hearing the DR650 can be lowered and fitted with a low seat.
