4 points to 4-Mile
I setup a day trip with KLRWorld.com Forums member Popper to go from Denver to the 4-Mile OHV area just northeast of Buena Vista, Colorado. I also told the folks in the Rockies forum here that we were were going and Pinner said he would meet us on his Tiger.
The main for this ride was so that I could evaluate the newly installed Cogent Dynamics Moab Shock & progressively wound Moab Fork Springs for a Product Review at KLRWorld.com
So the plan was for Popper & I to meet at a gas station in Morrison, CO to fuel up & then head south to Fairplay to have breakfast at the Brown Burro resturaunt.
I got there at 720 am, gassed up & got working on a cup of coffee. Popper rode up a few minutes later, gassed up & then pulled his 2008 KLR650 up next to my 2001-
A few other riders came over to look at our bikes, and that delayed us for at least 30 minutes. So we finally got on the road, a bit behind schedule but not too late. We headed south on 285 and were clipping along at a sprited clip in the 30 degree, clear air.
The weather was clear and cold, and I wasn't paying close attention to my speed (I was leading) and the next thing I know I see a Colorado State trooper coming the other way and then flip on his lights.
I kept riding at a slowed pace & noticed that Popper was no longer behind me. So I figured he got pulled over and that the trooper would soon be coming for me. Sure enough, I saw him coming up fast with all the lights on so I pulled over at the 1st available spot.
As he was getting out of his cruiser Popper pulled up. He took off his helmet and gave me that "kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar" look.
So the trooper asked me how fast I was going and what the speed limit was, I told him I thought I was going around 65 in a 65 zone, he smiled and said he had me at 75 in a 50 and Popper at 70. Then he told me my tags were expired (DOH! I thought I renewed those when I moved this past July).
"Let's get this overwith" I thought, we gotta meet Pinner for breakfast & we have at least 30 minutes of road ahead of us.
So he wrote us our tickets - (sorry, no pics)
Me, 74 in a 50 (instead of 75 to drop the points by 2) and Popper at 69 in a 50. My total cost was $186. 4 points for me, 2 for Popper.
So I called Pinner & told him what was up & when we'd be there. We headed out and found Pinner's Tiger waiting for us-
We went in and had a great breakfast, warm coffee & lots of motorcycle talk. We then rode south to 4 mile and headed for the Gravel pit. This is a great place to warm up-
Here are some pics of Popper & Pinner-
Popper headed over to a side area with some big whoops and dropped the KLR during a climbing left turnaround- no damage other than some scratches-
So we left that area and headed to the area of 4 Mile on the west side of 285. We were having so much fun that I didn't stop enough for pics, but at a steep section I pulled over to take a few. I put my kickstand down, got off & then watched my KLR take a dirtnap-
I had to wait for Popper & Pinner to come down the hill to help me pick it up so I took some pics of them coming down. This of course is a lot steeper & trickier than it looks-
Then we came to a water crossing & I got a few pics-
We then headed south to Salida to visit Bonnie Azbug (Hayduke's wife- Hayduke was in Baja) and to have a late lunch.
We had a nice visit with Bonnie & a great meal down the street at a resuraunt that is in a converted gas station. Great food!
So Pinner then headed back to the Colorado Springs area & Popper & I headed back to Denver. It was a cold ride back but gave us time to think about how much fun we had.
And how did the Cogent Dynamics suspension perform?
My KLR was transformed! I rode effortlessly all day long. This upgrade is confidence inspiring to say the least. Look for the full review at KLRWorld.com in the next few weeks.

He got both of you, riding motorcycles, while travelling in the opposite direction?
You need a lawyer. Specifically a ticket specialist. Around here they are $75 and can make anything short of DUI disappear.
