Embarrassingly yours,
Kicksave.
Unfortunately, attachments are turned off at the moment - too much load on the server, I think. You can only link to them from another website (Smugmug, photobucket, things like that). If you haven't got a website to host them on, email them through to me and I'll put them on my smugmug, if you like.

I suppose but to me, this is an essential motorcycle. I don't see larding it up with windscreens, heated grips and other pieces which belong on a GS12 but not, IMO, on a light, lithe GX.

Shake down cruise tomorrow

[quote=Janet from Joisey]Kicksave,
Congrats on the new XCountry! It's amazing how much fun the lighter machines are. So many folks are stuck on that bigger-is-better thing. . . . Then, they get on the little bikes, especially in the twisties or dirt, and this huge grin takes over.
I hope the stuff-seat cures the passenger footpeg issue for you.

Padding the seat helped quite a bit. It allows me to slide back further, which adds leg room and changes the angle of my foot when it's on the peg. Now my heel is clear of the rear pegs. I smoothed the hump by having the upholterer add foam up front, shave the back, then add a crowned layer over the entire seat. Then we added a little color to the tail to simulate a seat cowl. We used the carbon vinyl in black, and sunburst orange. The material looks good with the carbon heat shields from the Leo Vince pipe.

Decapitation by windscreen?

Solution: Don't crash.

Seriously, I've thought about that, and if BMW thinks that the 650GS, the 800GS, and the 1200GS and GSA are okay with windscreens, I think the XCountry will be okay with a small one -- certainly no bigger than the one on the GSA.

BTW, this was today (the parts without wall-to-wall fist-sized rocks):

Hey Geoffster, where is that location? Now that I have an Xcountry, you'll have to tell me where all the hot spots are .

Thumb Technologically challenged

The seat is not standard anymore. I had Erwin's Upholstery in Long Beach, Ca. reshape and add padding to the factory seat. I wanted a flat seat to allow fore and aft movement. I also wanted more seat height with a slightly crowned profile in front near the "tank". And we removed the hump. Note: when shaving the hump, be aware. The tool case mounts under the seat. Simply removing padding can create an uncomfortable hard spot . The guys at Erwin's pointed that out to me.

I also wanted to add some color to the tail to simulate a Flat Track Bike look. It's hard to match that School Bus... I mean Sunrise Yellow. But Erwin's had a carbon vinyl in ironically Sunset Orange that was close enough .

Lastly, I had to enlist the help of Rallybug to get the pics online. Ain't no way I can get a sound clip figured out. But I owe everyone at least a reasonable facsimile based on my level of technological sophistication. So here it goes:

At lower RPM's it goes VROOM, VROOM, pop pop, VROOM. But on the gas it goes VROOM BRAAP pop pop rumble, VROOOOOM BRAAAAAAP.

Seriously, I love the exhaust. It came with a few baffle choices, from discreetly throaty, to my neighbors hate me loud . And it included the Spark Arrestor, necessary for California off road use. It does have a very nice sound. I enjoyed the short baffle for a day before switching to the neighbor-friendly quieter set up .

PM sent.

Maybe I'll get some sound clips for the inmates ... (And I so love that seat!)

Squeaky rear brake

Anyone else find that his/her rear brake squeals/howls at about 20 mph?

I've even taken the pads out, roughed them up, cleaned them with brake cleaner, and wiped the rotor, but as soon as they bedded-in, they squealed again.

Talked to a G800GS rider yesterday and he says his bike does the same. (Which saved me a trip to the dealer on a day that deserved RIDING.)

sounds to me like your backpressure is a bit low..... but it is hard to tell unless you run it a bit longer......

anyway...... that is a great looking custom seat.
