either one... what did the part cost?

I'm looking more and more at biting bullet and doing the full Buell double-light conversion. ... I'm not happy with my upgraded bulb in the stocker headlight, I'd like a grill/protector for the light/s, the Buell fairing looks fairly simple to extend, though it ain't very wide, is it?

but then, the Beemer fairing idea sure looks good.... if it works.

Just a heads up. I've got a Buell CityX to keep my DR company and I can tell you the light output of the Buell is poor. It's a common complaint with the XB series.

It may be an upgrade but you still may not be happy with the result as far as light is concerned. If you do decide to go with the Buell setup, you might think about adding HID to it(or at least budget for it).

my winter riding on the DR

Once I was crazy and went on a cross country trip in winter on my DR. I just went down to the local cycle store and bought the tallest (24"), cheapest, flat, handlebar mounted windscreen they had (think I paid 45$ for it and it may have been designed for a scooter) and bolted it up. It was wonderfull. I set it up so that the lower edge of it was just an inch in front of the little "number plate" above the headlight. That shot wind up the inside of the screen and reduced turbulance quite a bit (this came after experimentation). When I got to my destination I took it off in 5 min. When I got ready to ride home back on in 5 min. I never went on a long trip in that bike without it again. It was even a great wind noise reducer...ugly as hell...I loved it.

Eek Stock KLR650 screen on DR650 front

Couldn't be easier! Drill three holes and mount up with nylon license plate bolts/nuts. I'm 5"8" with a 30" inseam and the wind hits me at neck level.

Use the same mounting holes as the stock screen. Wind hits me just above eye level. A little more noise than stock but no buffeting.

Eek KLR650 tall screen on DR650 mounting

I couldn't find a 100mm cap bolt threaded its entire length so I made my own by welding another cap bolt to the existing upper fork pinch bolts (remove them from the bike first). Then split a rubber gromet to place between the cap bolt head and the screen to act as a vibration dampner.
I originally intended to add a nut to the "extended bolt" to lock the windshield in place but decided against it because:
1) The screen rests firmly on the bolt support without any apparent movemnet.
2) The screen is able to flex forward in the event of an "over the bars" adventure thus saving cracking the screen or my noggin'

Advantages over other screens:
1) Inexpensive ($65 on eBay)
2) Wind hits me above eye level. Slight increase in noise, no buffeting.
3) No hardware on your handlebars or in the cockpit area
4) No windshield flex at speed
5) Looks like it belongs on the bike and not "added on"
6) Three screws for removal of screen

It's a keeper!

National Cycle shield...

Fast on or off with no tools. Ride long distance on slab with it on and remove to ride single track! I got an extra set of mounts and can toss it on either my old Sabre or my XR650L. Should work fine on the DR as well.

Anyone try the Z-Technik screen for the F650GS? It is only 1/2" bigger than the standard screen and much cheaper than the stock screen at $110 vs $180.

This looks like a great find! I'd have bought this if I'd found it before my recent purchase. I might even buy one anyway, looks like it'll really work well. I'd like to see a side-view of it if anyone's got one, on any bike.

I have the National deflector on mine and I like it so far. I have it positioned down as far as possible and even thinking about notching the stock fairing a bit so I can push it down just a bit more.

It does take all the wind off my chest. Since it got cold, my winter jacket seems almost like a wind sail at high speeds, something that wasn't as noticable with the mesh jacket. With the screen all the wind now hits me just below eye level, and is alittle noisey because all the wind is focused right there. If I stand off the seat about 2 inches it is perfect, my head is in normal air and not noisey at all.

I had the same issue (noise) and took the screen off (not too cold here). But if you find a solution that takes the wind of the chest and provides clean air I am all
