Tach for X-Challenge

Has anyone installed a tach on their X-Challenge?

I have a TrailTech Vapor on my XR400 - love it... but I don't want to replace the display on the X-Ch, I just want to add a simple digital tach so I have a better feel for the engine speed (especially when I am wearing my ear plugs).

Any ideas?

I would like to get a tach on it too.. just to see what RPM I'm riding at, not essential but nice to know..

I had a bmw boxer that did not come with a tach, and I had one added.. The F650GS has a tach and the X's engine is essentially the same, so a small digital tach should be do-able..

Interested in links and mod possibilities..

Should be real easy.... the TrailTech computer only needed one wire wrapped around the spark-plug lead, and another attached to the frame for reference ground. There must be something out there that is simply a tach rather than a whole computer like the TrailTech.

I always ride the wave of torque.

The only bike I needed a tachometer on was on an Aprilia RSV250 2 stroker. That engine pulled like a rocket from 8800 till 11999rpm, and completely died at 12000, so I knew when to shift.

I also ride the torque wave on my GS, I don't use the tach to shift, I just ride by feel, but I like to have it to see what RPM the bike runs at when doing 100 or 60 or whatever..

I remember seeing a flat LCD add on tach.. it was quite compact, any one has any leads?

Found this out of Germany.. not cheap.. about 189 Euro, can be had a speedo or tach

http://www.motogadget.com/en/frameset.html

I will email them to see if they have mounting instructions online for their tach to see if it can be fitted to the X.

It's non illuminated, and it's disposable, when the battery runs out, you can't replace it..

I found another one for Harley's, very small 2 digit LED tach, but it's a small add on for HD's.

The battery lasts 5 years - the disposable part might not be an issue... but you're correct, it isn't illuminated.

I emailed to see if they can send me a PDF with the mounting instructions to see how it will hook up to a thumper and the display adjusts for varying lighting conditions, plus you can program your redline so it warns you before you hit the rev limiter.

Anything from TT costs a fortune, I'm not sure what the IMO goes for, but if the one I've linked above works, it would be great, looks like a quality piece too, and not cheap, but on par with what bike tachs usually go for, and it's quite compact.

So far, I've not heard back from them. I emailed them to ask if it would work with a single cylinder enduro bike, if it's waterproof, to send me a PDF with installation instructions and what would shipping cost to this part of the world... waiting to hear back..

It's cheaper for us, it's 189 Euro plus 14 euro shipping.

I heard back from the company, here's what he had to say:

I don't know what kind of ignition this BMW has but often singles
have a CDI which is not compatible. In this case you would need an
additional ignition signal pickup unit (about 20 EUR).

If you have an injection and a regular ignition coil no problem is
expected.

Or do you have plug caps with integrated coils?

Any ideas Max??
