Tour operators in Namibia

<HR style="COLOR: #cccccc" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->After a couple years of lurking/dreaming I finally have the time to stop dreaming and start travelling. Earlier this year we did a self guided mostly dirt trip in Baja Mexico, but now I'd like to try a 2 to 3 week guided tour (mostly dirt) in Namibia/S Africa in the first part of 2008. I've looked at all the linked and searchable tour operators in Namibia and SAfrica, (thanks moderators) but still would like to get personal experiences. Has anyone out there had any experiences with tour operators in these areas? If so please let me know.

The Low Down on Nam

There are no rental operations in Namibia. I was there for a month last summer to do a ride and do some volunteer work. Big saga, but the gear did not arrive. That being said, I picked up quite a bit of info while there.

You will be renting out of Capetown or Joburg in SA. As of last summer, no hires in Nam. Try Moto Berlin. An F650 is plenty of bike, but most of the hire bikes I saw were G1200s with SA plates. Don't worry about packing a ton of food...there is a German-owned SPAR market in every little town and bottled water is sold everywhere. DO carry extra fuel, because the backcountry gravel roads may only see 1 or 2 vehicles a day. Or week.

Don't travel alone, find a buddy. Not because the people of Nam would do you any harm, but because the roads are narrow, there is lots of game that can dart into your way, and people drive waaay too fast with tires that have far too little tread. Do NOT, under any circumstances, drive at night. Game is everywhere.

Have you discovered the Wilddogs forum? It is the SA version of advrider. You will also want to get maps2africa downloaded.

There's a German outfit called Karoo that rents bikes out of Johannesburg, ZA. I don't know if they do organized tours though. I know they rent out R1200GS/F650's and maybe others.

Try Lathita Expeditions

My brother -in-law owns Lathita expeditions . He will be able to hook you up with whatever you need . He has motorbikes to his availability to rent . They are BMW 650's . You can either do it self guided .

We lived together in Botswana for about 4 years and been on numerous safaris together. He knows the best places off the beaten track pretty well.

My opinion if you go to South Africa , you have to do the Garden Route . It is one of the most spectacular places you will ever find . It runs from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth . You can ride in Baviaanskloof which is very good for any ADV bike up to a 950 .

Namibia is also a very good choice with a lot of sand dunes . You can almost have your won mini-dakar .

His contact details are as follows :

Send me your address , then I can send you some brochures that I have got for you to look at.

Try Great African Outdoors. Rolf van der Venn

He guided my group through South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. Great time and very affordable. Rents bikes too out of Jo'burg and CapeTown.

Namibia Rentals

Hi All

We rented a GS1200 from Karoo biking in Cape Town in January

http://www.karoo-biking.de/en/

Jurgen and the team are really helpful, the bikes spot on and SA is a biking paradise. We went thru the Garden Route, up to Port Elizabeth and then back thru the Addo Elephant park, Karoo desert and to Cape Town via the Stellenbosch......Brilliant

Karoo biking do organised trips to Namibia, but of course you can simply rent and do your own thing.............we are planning a return visit maybe next year to do exactly this.
