If any of you New Jerseyites want to go but are unsure about riding to the city, speak up and we can meet up somewhere.

Did some googling, didn't come up with much aside from some private websites with pictures of last year events. What is it?

It's a New Years Day ride (not a race

) around Manhattan that starts and finishes at the Sidewalk Cafe. This version (there was something similar in the early 70s that lasted a few years) started around 1991 (iirc). The "higher moral purpose" was to provide a venue for bikers to get up relatively early on 1/1 and go for a ride- something that would be difficult to do had one exercised wretched excess on New Year's Eve.

Popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years- surprisingly not necessarily due to weather: a few years ago there was one of the largest (40-50 people) turnouts during a blinding rainstorm. Oddly enough, that was the year the Daily News decided to do a feature article on it.

Note- this is not a race. If it looks like people are racing you can either
a) attribute it being hung over and ignore it
b) try to catch up and remind people it's not a race

Yes, this is a "postal run"....neither rain, sleet, snow or hail will stop it. There have been years where I've had to trailer my bike out of my neighborhood to get past the snow, in order to do the run. We've run it in 5 below, snow, rain, you name it. An annual tradition for the first ride of the year. Be there, or be square.

at the Dales Chilly-Chili ride. It's been going on for about 25 years and I always went with my Dad when he was still around.
