Point and shoot cameras - best access while riding?
Hi y'all from the Down Under Summer
Went for a ride the day before yesterday intending to just take my time and take a few pics along the way to share with you folk (as it happened, i got left the 2nd best digi camera as my wife and son are out of town and also the photos were taken in the middle of the day - so all the colours are a bit washed out...) anyhow, i had the camera in the front pocket of my ventura bag on my ventura rack but with the bag reversed so it sits on the seat like this: ![]() and it was reasonably handy to get to but i did have to stop and take a glove off and reach behind me and get the camera out every time i saw scenery i wanted to show you - and so eventually i got tired of doing it and hence you guys and gals miss out! My question is : what arrangements do you folks have to take pics whilst on the move? (and yes i know it's not the absolute safest thing to do but....) I seem to recall someone having their p&s camera teathered to them on an extendable leash type arrangement....cool but safe enough to trust a camera to? Cheers and thanks for your advice! Shane

A Vstrom rider I know uses a throttle lock, his right hand and his p & s on a retractable pull chain, then slides it back into his camera bag on a belt or into a pocket. He was pretty quick with this system.

After being on this site I have attempted to take pix when going down the road. 2 things I thought about. Easy axcess and what if I drop it?
I tuck it in a shirt pocket so it's easy to get to with a strap around the neck if I have to let go quick. Only done it a few times - too worried about crashing. If I had a smoother bike or was slower it would be much easyer.

This is what I use to attach my Canon camera to my jacket.
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-NIKON-RE...257354-9023067 I'd rather not risk having a cord around my neck and a tree limb on the side of the trail end my day. It's got an 8oz pull with a 60 lb breaking strength. It's got enough pull that if you have to drop the camera and grab the bars it has the strength to retract my little camera. Get one, you'll be happy with the decision. Dirty

jacket
I've just been living rather dangerously.. I keep my little camera in a pouch that attaches to the waist adj. belt of my Kilimanjaro jacket.. when I want it, it's easy enough to pull it out left handed and take some pics or video.. but no safety cord yet... just careful!
Here's an example of a handheld movie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2WrLuTCFhQ check out the others in my archives for different mounting arrangements.. as a photographer with access to all kinds of rigging stuff, I've tried all kinds of clamps & articulated arms to mount cameras all over my bike.. If you own a digital SLR, you can also rig it up with Pocketwizard transceivers to wirelessly trigger the camera from your handlebars! (not a cheap solution, but way cool!) Also, I think it's SW Motech that makes a cool camera mount for your standard gas cap screws.. ............ yup, here it is: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade...view/2210/441/ happy shooting ;) |

I do the neck lanyard/pocket combo, and pull out the camera (Canon SD1000) and flip it on, and use the LCD to frame the shot.

I keep mine in chest pocket ready to pull out. When I know I'll be taking several shots, I wear it on my right wrist. I videoed coming down most of Pikes Peak in July. When I get up to speed, it kinda rests on Aero tank pannier. I have to stop to put it back in pocket.

I keep my camera in a Pelican box mounted on my tank, allowing me to reach in and grab it easily.
Before I had the Pelican I had a SW-MOTECH tank bag that has a little separate pouch that a typical sized point and shoot camera fit in perfectly. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade...view/2131/441/ ![]() Shot with Canon PowerShot A710 IS at 2007-12-30

My Cortech jacket has chest pockets with vertical zippers and loops inside the pockets. I attach the short lanyard of my Lumix inside my right pocket and it's easy to pull out and shoot as long as I don't want to hold the camera far from my body. These pockets have REALLY waterproof zippers too.

I used to carry my P&S in my breast pocket, but I was always getting dusty lenses. I now carry it in my tank bag, wrapped in one of those soft synthetic dusting cloths. I leave the tank bag open a bit with the lanyard hanging out. I can just rip it out of the bag, in a pinch. If taking a lot of pics, I just lay the camera lens down on the cloth.
I usually stop for pics. If I need to click on the fly, I turn the camera on (in the bag), wrap the lanyard around my thumb, pull out the camera and click away. I still like to carry the P&S in my pocket and am thinking of lining my pocket with the dust cloth.
