Got the shovel out to dig this one up...(thread)

I'm just trying to get into bikes. I grew up on quads (Honda and Kaw), dad had a Suzuki 125 Dual Sport 80's something 2 stroke, I didn't have my license then, so I had plenty of time around the yard (20 acres) with it.

With gas prices going up so much, I needed to find another place to vent my "up north" needs. I'm really into Jeeps or 4x4's as far as trailriding goes, trying to find new trails and challenges just across the border in Canada by Sault St. Marie, ONT. But its 8 hours and tons of gas to tow my Jeep up.

So, I decided on getting an old (read: cheap) bike to fix up and tweak to suit my needs. I'm not sure what I want out of a bike, so it won't hurt my pocket book too much with this thing:

1973 Yamaha CT175. I got 3 bikes for 350 bucks. Between the 3, I think I can make one run. Planning on plating it and getting it street legal again. I originally wanted to use it to scout trails with up in Canada (ONT. government decided to designate our whole play area-about 100 square miles or more- a protected area which closed about 90% of the known trails for us). But after looking through all the pics on this site and reading trip reports, I'm itching to try a bit more on the bike. Hopefully I can make some long weekend trips by backroads touring some areas in Michigans UP or Canada. If I enjoy this stuff, I might try finding a newer bike to suit whatever needs I end up with after using this bike.

I'm a backpacker, a driving tourist, and a trailrider, this bike thing seems to blend it all together!

That looks like a great project. You might have two runners there.

This is the only picture I have of this gem. I traded off my 81 GPZ1100 for 2 of these guys. One was a standard RZ, and the other was a KR replica. This is a hodge podge of both. AN old race bike with a Spec II stage 4 buildup. It was supposed to have around 80 hp. It was close! I rode it for a little while, but being 6'7" it's hard to fold on the little bikes.
