Good local beers/travel plans
Here's a scenario:
I pull into your town, you notice my out-of-state plate and ADV sticker on the bike. The ADV sticker suggests that I might enjoy a beer, the license plate further tells you that I might not know where to find a tasty LOCALLY-BREWED beer. What would you suggest? Please tell us what a stranger would need to know to get the best beer of your region. Maybe somebody will put a beer tour together, who knows? Obviously, if y'all choose Bud from the KwikeeMart, we're not getting anywhere we haven't already been. Mods: feel free to toss this into another area as appropriate |

I just search through Beer Advocate in advance of where I'm heading (or Real beer, pubcrawler, etc.) If you are looking specifics though, SE PA has tons of great places for good beer. My problem when traveling is finding a motel within walking distance of good beer.

Would someone in the audience please reach out to ezrydr and lift him up ?
Isn't there someone heading toward eastern OK who could drop off a proper craft made beer for an ADV brother? I trust someone hears your call, ez. Help should be on the way. Oh the humanity..... |

How about for Bike Week?
Daytona is coming up- Does Florida provide any local choices? Don't get me wrong, this is not snobbery. I drink my share (and yours) of Bud, etc., but small breweries that make something unique and tasty also deserve support. We are living in a Beer renaissance in the US. What, if anything, is worth a sidetrip in the sunshine state?

I have been to a few of these places and tried a small number of these beers (limited budget). While personal preference will always rule the day, a few comments: Big Horn Brewing aka The Ram. Brewery attached to a restaurant. Their food is comparable to say Bennigans or TGI Fridays. The beer is OK but nothing to write home to Mom about. They have roughly 5-7 varieties to choose from. My personal favorite is the Hefeweizen. Can't compare to the Germans, but still damn tasty. The Ram in Lakewood is a bit of a dump. Go to the one on the waterfront in Tacoma. Elysian Brewing is located in the Pike Place Market (if memory serves correct). Never tried the beer, but the atmosphere alone is worth the trip. Pike Place Market is a very interesting place to just hang out and people watch. Hales Ales: good, strong beer. Can't go wrong with it. Harmon's: Another brewery attached to a restaurant. The beer is comparable to the beers at the Ram. The location is what makes the difference. You are smack dab in UW country with lots of college girls. After a while, what beer? If you have money left over and are there late enough, stumble over to The Loft afterwards. Lots of ladies there. Mac and Jack's. Brudda, their African Amber will make you wanna slap your mama. I had this beer for the first time at Safeco Field at a Mariners game. It was like liquid crack to me. Slightly bitter but, man alive it is good! My favorite beer, hands down. They sell it at a couple other places, but they don't bottle it. I have yet to make the pilgrimage to the brewery, but it is definitely on my bucket list. By the way, a plastic cup of this liquid nirvana at Safeco costs $8. As much of a cheap f**k as i am, I will pay that price. Mariners first, M&J always.Redhook is well known around these parts and is a damn fine beer. When I have the cash, Redhook is a fine investment. Always leaves you wanting another. My liver is much pleased by this beer. Now if you are a cheap bastard like me and only on occasion splurge, allow me to recommend three courses of action: Down and out: Roll yourself a homeless around these parts and you will more than likely find a can of Steel Reserve around his (or her) person. Nasty as hell, tastes like a cross between cream soda, vomit and rubbing alcohol. Imagine a can of hammered ass...like that would taste, only worse. But it will put your head in a tailspin after 2 cans. 12 pack @ $4.99 at Arco in Lakewood by Western State (go figger). Budget Beer: Henry Weinhard's. A 12 pack costs anywhere from $8.99 (Fred Meyer) to $10.99 (Albertsons in Lacey). They have two fairly good beers that I recommend, Classic Dark and Blonde. Both are of excellent quality for the price. Splurge: head to the Gravity Beer Market in Olympia. The young lady behind the counter is very friendly and knowledgable and they have scheduled tastings for the myriad of beers they sell. Pricey, but man, it's worth it. Money well spent. Enjoy!

92 Breweries in Colorado
Colorado has a few.
By Randall Blake, Colorado may just be the Napa of beer breweries in the United States. What better way to get a Rocky Mountain high than to slurp some of the best suds the state can offer? Denver itself ranks first in the nation in beer production per capita and second in the number of breweries. Colorado is home to four of the top-50 brewing companies in the nation. Just about everywhere you go, there is a brew pub. With 92 breweries statewide, Colorado is ranked third in the country in volume of brewpubs and craft breweries. It is also ranked as the number two beer producing state in America, just behind California, producing over 21,000,000 barrels in 2005, according to the 2007 Brewer's Almanac Have a designated driver or hire a cab and enjoy beer heaven. Also check out the Great American Beer Fest in Denver in October. |
