Friday night is two-fers. Rent one, get one free! You just have to feed, clothe, educate, baby-sit and raise them like they were your own!

New GS owners

My son and I recently got GS1100s, an '81EX and an '82GL. We don't know yet who will ride which.

The E got a new seat cover and a bit of tuning.

The G got a modified seat and sport bars to make it less cruiser and more classic.
Plans are to ride the Beartooth and Bighorns which are just up the road a piece.

Well, here she is. ALMOST done. Since these pics, I have mounted the exhaust and oil cooler/oil lines, all calipers installed and bled. Got the Shorai battery installed. Waiting on a different rear sprocket & an offset counter sprocket:

No mods to the frame, but have made the following changes:

2001 Bandit 1200 forks (stock valving, with 1.0 kg RaceTech springs), rims (rear rim in stock swing arm) and 6 pot tokico brakes.
1989 GSXR750 Triples (Top clamp is a Speigler unit allowing me to run handlebars)
Vintage Mikuni VM33 smoothbores
V&H 4-1 Street megaphone
I plan to add a Holeshot fork brace as well...

The factory exhaust weighs 44lbs. The V&H weighs 12lbs.
The Shorai Li-Fe battery weighs 6 lbs. less than the factory lead acid battery.
I didn't weigh the difference between the Bandit rims & the stock rims, though.

SO, the bike is at a verifiable 38lbs lighter than stock.

I wouldn't have thought the stock battery even weighed 17 lbs.

They claim 16.91 lb difference. The stock Lead acid battery is HUGE. The Shorai weighs 1.6 lbs and fits in the palm of your hand. Honestly, I'd be inclined to believe it. Unfortunately, I recycled the old battery, so I can't test their claim. Perhaps I'll yank the KLRs battery (which is pretty fair sized) and see what the difference is there.

EDIT: Just did some checking...according to the Yuasa site, the battery for the GS weighs 7.6lbs, so Shorai's site is off by 10 lbs, if it is measuring a dry battery.

I bought this 1980 GS1100E a few days ago and will be picking up next week. It's not showroom, but it's a solid 8.5-9 out of ten and has mikuni flat slides on it, quite quick. It will be getting lower bars and the windshield will go immediately. We'll see what's next after that. I'm just getting used to my first airhead, and my CB750 is pretty tired these days, this should be fun for a minute.

I had mine set up exactly like that for a few years while I was using it for touring. I used some soft throw over bags and a duffle strapped on the passenger seat. I went all over the west with that. Pretty comfy set up that way. Then I put lower bars and a small windshield on it and had the seat redone in more of a gunfighter style. Did a few track days with it set up like that. It's still sitting in the corner of my garage awaiting a resurection.
You're going to enjoy that bike what ever you decide to do with it. How many miles are on it? It looks really well taken care of.

Not sure why you would measure a dry battery? Apples to apples and all that.

FWIW, I replaced the HUGE 21-pounder in my Moto Guzzi Eldorado with a less than 2- pounder from Maviryk Design. Starts at least as well now and 19 pounds of weight savings is nice.

Not sure why either, but maybe it's kinda like the "pre-cooked weight" they advertise for hamburgers

I just quoted the info off the Yuasa site. It did not stated whether the 7.6 lbs was with acid solution or dry.

I also briefly had a 1963 BMW 250 (rare) which I sold to get the R75. I'm riding a Suzuki 03 Volusia now but still want to get back into an adventure saddle before I'm too damned old.....
