If you could only take one trip, where would you go Alaska or Mexico?

Hi, I want to ask your opinion about a thing I have, by summer of 2010 I would like to travel one more time, I was almost all set up for Alaska, but after seeing several reports on Mexico I wonder if I should go and visit MY own country before I continue discovering the rest of the world.

I have being to Europe several times, the West cost and Canada several times, Mexico? only Mexico City, Oaxaca and a little of Baja, so there is a very big unbalance here between local and foreign travel...

I could come up with 5 weeks and that is good time to spend around Mexico, at a good pace, 5 weeks for doing Alaska? a little more tight but still good time.

So what would you do? I know is like apples and oranges, but there are still fruits, right?

Very different, both great.

Maybe choose a good weather window for AK and do it.

MX is a different mindset, IMO.

In 2010, just down the road a bit, I'll be.........

Alaska

But of course I live there.

No language barrier.
More scenic
Less bandidos
Great roads-paved and unpaved
The arctic circle
Denali
Nice local riders

I haven't been to either yet so obviously I'm well qualified to respond. Just from what I read and pictures I've seen, little, just about anywhere on earth, compares to the epic wild grandeur of Alaska. So, that's where I'm heading.

I live quite close to Mex on the AZ side, it would take all of 45 minutes to ride there. I would LOVE to see Alaska. There is SO many things there that are like a new land, a foreign country, a new world...it will be a short list for me. ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN BAJA... mexico is a dangerous, dirty, currupt country; alaska is beautiful.

I've been to both

First of all think of it as "where am I going to go FIRST" and try to get to both. I have to disagee with quicksilver in his opinion of Mexico as a dirty, corrupt Country. I have been on rides to Copper Canyon, Baja (Many times) and into the interior. I have always had positive experiences especially with the local people. The farther you get from the border the better it gets. It's not better or worse than Alaska just different. Alaska has a wealth of natural beauty no arguement there (the kenai pennisula is awesome) but camp on the beach at Bahia de Kino or Bay of LA and watch the sunrise over the water and it's a coin flip. Ride a two track to Urique in the bottom of Copper Canyon and you'll remember it for life. Anyway my .02, try to do both, life is short.

I've been to Mexico, this past summer. (I've got an ongoing trip report being posted) I've wanted to visit Alaska, too.

After my trip to Mexico, I've started to reconsider my idea of going to Alaska. I just may go back to Mexico and see more. That's how great I thought it was.

As for Quicksilvers assertion that Mexico is dangerous and dirty... well, he lives near (and probably has only visited) the border towns. Did you know Alaska is ranked in the top ten states for violent crime?

I'll probably eventually end up in Alaska, at least once... but for now, Mexico still has me captivated and the next long ride I take will probably be to return to Mexico to see those places I missed the first time.

My suggestion: Flip a coin the day before you go.

Jamie

Maybe, but I'll bet it's all in Anchorage with a high percentage of domestics.

Hey Damaso, IMHO go to Alaska. I'm planning that trip to may be 2009 or 10. You are in Baja, you can take the ferry and start discovering México in short trips. From today to 2010 you have several holidays, weekends and short vacations to start traveling inside México.

Read you in MotoAventuras

Thanks to everyone for giving your 2 cents, they are both great trips if the making.

Quicksilver I guess you have not been around that much and it's ok, maybe you just know Juarez.

Mr P.Puga tienes razon. I will do more of it in short trips even if they come in a form of fly,car so I can take the family.

Keep it coming.

Alaska, Alaska, Alaska. Done the ride, go do it. It is ALL good. No regrets. Which I had taken longer than a month. It is BIG place. Not an ugly mile the whole route. Awesome Ride. Grizzly bears or Bandidos???
