Hmmmn...
So I'm wondering while I've got it all stripped down like this if I should weld in some of those HPN'esque frame gussets in a few critical locations. You know, around the backbone, steering head and swingarm pivot areas. It's gonna have a strong motor. I'm thinking a bit of chassis might be nice, too. Hmmmn... |

Does anybody have a link to the thread on those HPN-type frame gusset mods or remember who posted them?

Ever onward! I took apart the rocker arms tonight to clean them. 240 needles, total... I kept counting them- 57, 58.... shit... or I'd see 59, 60, 61(!), 62(!!) and go back and count the prior set again. This is progress I did a bunch of googling to answer you gusset query, and ended up with a lot of only peripherally related stuff.

If I were you I might just get some new bearings. They're cheap and you won't have to worry about them. It's usually the cages that wear/fail and then you've got needles all over the place.
Thanks for your help on the search. Someone on this site had a thread going where they were modding a frame along the lines of the HPN bikes. Thread included some highly detailed photos of the work. You think I can remember who posted it or where? I'm going to have a closer look at the frame next time I'm in my buddies garage... |

OEM, they're $27 USD per, and I would need 8 Speaking of the cages, how would you pull them out? A press? and is there a shelf inside the rocker arm to set their depth?

OEM, my bum-bum!
![]() Find the nearest bearing industrial supply and buy them for $4-$7, tops. Press them straight out with your bench vice and some creative socket positioning. The new ones press straight in with just your vice. Just make em flush with the ends of the rocker. There's no step or shoulder. Take your time, be careful, enjoy yourself. It's a no-brainer.

I'm seeing encouraging things inside this motor...
Pistons and bores appear to be good on innitial inspection... Less than 0.001" taper in the bores... Only the rings appear to be overly worn, which would be a nice surprise if that's all that's wrong... Whoo Hoo! Gotta go make some more measurements.... (sounds of pattering off to the basement...) Pictures at 11:00!

Okay, so it's pictures at 01:00.
It's 11:00 somewhere! Moving the motor from the garage to the basement...

Never trust a clean bench. ![]()
