Get much rattling of the shrouds against the tank? Different looking, I like it.

Rattle?

No rattles, Plastic Tank!
My 1st concern wasl rubbing of the bracket that may go through the tank! - Infact it all sits very snug.
NB: I was originally chasing a SMR XR400 Tank (Steel- easy to paint and customise) but non-existant 2nd hand and genuine replacement shrouds also very expensive!
Unfortunatley the original white tanks on these 97 models, don't accept sticker kits real well, and they stain very badly. Additionally due to the leaching out of petrol based residue through the surface - painting is not an option either.
After tripping over a complete plastics kit (USED) at the local recycle centre, I was suprised how well the shrouds went on with minimal fuss!
I then intended to purchase new shrouds, but they seem to only be aval in black so I opted for the NOS CR250 "Monster" sticker kit from a US ebayer to hide the blemishes on the shrouds. The CR style rear gaurd and XR front fender came from ROCKY MOUNTIAN ATV/MX - very good pricing and quick postage too!

Electrical cable ties hold the rear edges tight to tank and frame work!

This image shows the lower mid support attached to the frame/head gussett plate.

Next time the seat is off and/or the valve clearences are done, I will take better shots and copy the brackets if any one wants the same!

RESULT! It is NOT a CRF anything! (Therefore won't blow up!)
Beauty in the eye of the beholder - Yeh I like if you don't - I don't care!
Other (cost effective) mods, - well I would kill for the fuel injection off a Honda TRX420 farm quad!!!!
Til then the very snappy 36mm Mikuni is fine!

Looking at adding a 8" race light to my XR. Anybody have issues installing one while running the 5.8 gallon tank?

Aloop makes a nice looking kit, but a 2 gallon tank is pretty much worthless for adventure riding out west.

I would be interested in the brackets. I like the way that looks. I too was hesitant about putting a new decal on my old red tank but this might just be a good new look option. What color red are those shrouds, do they match the stock color front fender? I know there are variations in red over the years and models. With a red tank maybe black or white shrouds would be a good option for me.

tank options

I was in the same vote, just wanted a little more modern look!
I did check out the A-Loop kit and recomend it highly - but here in Oz it was going to owe me $650.00 - $700.00 delivered to the door (Basically what it cost to rebuild the motor)!
I also wanted the RED Xr tank , but found out they also have the leaching issue and stickers just fall off. (Idiscovered this the hard way a few years back when I did the same rebuild project on a 91 XR600 - Decals bubbled up and fell off , see pic)
As for colour match - the CR ones on this bike (xr400) they where faded so as explained in earlier reply - I covered them with the sticker kit you see on the finished 400 !
You could do the same with NEW black shrouds (Approx $ 50 US) and put any 97,98 CR shroud decal kit on.
I will make point of getting the seat over this weekend and post a template of what is needed.
Here are the 600 shots (circa 2002-2003)
Rob.
