in need of a ride

Folks, had a freaking great ride on Saturday morning, 6 hours of tar, fire road and lots of tight single track. about 10liters of fuel. Absolutely shagged. , Rode with a mate on a ktm 450. we swapped bikes and his comment was '"It's like riding a marshmallow!"

So I have a few suspension questions.

I need to set the rebound and compression setting to the middle and have another go, then adjust click by click from there.

I am 95 kg's plus gear so say 110kg, what's that 240lb?

I have a few spares accumulated in the shed, 4 sets of forks, a few rear shocks yellow, red, grey, and would like to know what's the easiest way to identify fork springs and rear shock spring, as in spring rate. Wire dia?, colour code?

According to this chart I need 0.48 fork springs, and 10.6 shock spring

Cheers
Rob

None are for sale until I sell of the two spare bikes I have, unless I get serious interest in wrecking/parting out.

Well, after riding the LA-Barstow to Vegas a few weeks ago I can scratch a few more off the 'ol bucket list. Here's one , for some reason I have always wanted to ride a motorcycle over Hoover Dam. On an XR4 no less.

I'd only read books and seen pictures of it, I never realized how tall it is in real life!! To say the least, an engineering nightmare!! .......Incredible!!!

Man, yeah. Did you go inside and take the tour? That's worth it.

I was last there in 2005, when they had just started on the foundations of the new bridge, which has been completed for some time now.

Man, that new bridge looks HUGE! We haven't been there since '06 on our street bikes. Nice to see you can still drive over the damn; I was wondering if they were going to close it to motorized vehicles after traffic didn't HAVE to go over it. We've been meaning to make it down there again. Thanks for sharing! We are all a little jealous (aside from the certain sore ass)!

You may want to ask that question over on Thumper Talk, in the XR250/400 section. There are some very tech-savvy guys on there that will certainly have an answer. http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/18-xr250400/

I'm about your weight and put .46 and 10.5 springs on. They worked well, one size stiffer in the forks might be ok. Either would be better than the stock .38 fork springs.

If the spring rate or a part number is printed on the spring, go by that. Otherwise install them and measure the sag to see if they're right. Supposedly you can figure the rate by using the metal stiffness and the dimensions of the springs. I don't know how accurate that would be.

I am an XR400 guy through and through, but give me your opinion on this: Am I crazy, or does a new Yamaha TT230R sound like a good deal?

Hear me out. Electric start, 34" seat height with normal 21"/18" wheels, reliably air cooled, 250 lbs wet, all for just over HALF the price of a new CRF. ($3999 msrp)

I've never ridden one, so they might suck. And I would be embarrassed to be seen on one, but I could always tell a passer-by that my bike is in the shop so I had to take my daughter's bike out.... But for the goat paths that I find myself on sometimes, that seat height and electric start are tempting. Thoughts?

This. Although my only experience with a Yamaha is a WR250R. And I can not stand riding that bike anytime I have been on it.

I'm certain I read somewhere that eventually they will make the dam 1 way traffic so you'll drive across the bridge one way and if you want to see the dam you would cross it from the other direction. With the bridge now in place and operational 100% of the dam traffic was sightseers like myself so I can only imagine the traffic nightmare before the bridge was built.

I rode/owned a bunch of newer bikes: plated WR450, a Husky 310, WR250 DS, WR250- plated dirt, different model DRZs, non are the same as the ole 400. A DRZ is just uninspiring to me all the extra 40lbs weight is in the front end and steering.

Just kick it! Stay true to the game! There really isn't a modern equivalent of the XR400

if you're bored, buy some new parts/ tank/ plastics
