it will..but remember, you're gettin close to the limit and if you have "other" items (brake lite, turn sigs, GPS, clock, Air conditioning, DVD player etc )that require some juice, you could be SOL..

On the subject of draw, if all lights (turn sings, brake) were converted to LED and the say, BD headlight were still incandescent. Would the stock stator push a .68-1a or 10w LED supplemental headlight

I would think so...the stock stator would probably do okay, but with its limited output, you could be pushing its limits..as in anything in life, money, love, motorcycles in the garage etc, I have always tried to live by the rule that it is better to have enough than not enough...but a feller will do what he has to do and if you can get by with minimum, then give it a go, but also know that you assume the risks.

It won't run a 55 or even a 35W HID, the stock stators output drops below the HIDs threshold wattage at idle, on a 35W HID the bulb will shut off at idle and try to restrike next time it's revved up, that eats into the HIDs lifespan pretty quickly. The 55W won't even strike as they have about a 70W initial surge requirment. I've attempted to run HID off one leg (100W) of a 200W stator and it had this problem even with the extra wattage. Problem is the stator's idle output, HIDs require a decent battery to suppliment the stator's output during that time.

Many people are fooled into thinking a 35W HID only uses 35W, that's pretty accurate for a good quality HID, many of the chinese systems use more than stated. The problem is they all have a large surge current when they first start up, around 15~20 amps higher than the 35 or 50W stated draw.

The stock system will run LED lights pretty well though with a DC conversion.

That's the clutch cable bent into the cylinder fin, cables kinked right there and I thought I just needed to lube the cable.
Even so I still pulled the cover and checked to see if the friction plates are within spec(looks good) so.. crossing my fingers that the cable is the issue

Thanks for the insight everyone

Quick question - sorry to intrude!

Folks, sorry to interrupt your regular programing, but could one of you fine xr400 owners do me a favor?
I need the length of the forks from a 96-04 - axle center to top of tube. It would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Nat

36" extended (no sag) center axle to top edge of the inner fork tube.

No worries.
While I'm at it, could I get the measurement between the bolt holes on the caliper bracket mount of the forks?

Since RideFeak's bike is buried, and mine's in the middle of the floor...

That's the bracket mounting tabs on the left-hand fork tube, not the caliper itself? That appears to be 103 mm, center-to-center.

Does anyone know how fast the xr400 will cruise with stock gearing? I'm headed to mexico in two weeks and I'd like to run high way speeds.

Thanks!
