Decided to bite the bullet and get myself a Pumper carb from XR's Only. I love this bike, but it is a bitch to start, and now it won't idle worth crap. I hope this carb is as good as all the hype I have heard.

But even with that cylinder it still ran! Now that everything is back together I got to take it for a spin yesterday and the motor certainly is a little more snappier.

Now (always something) that I have put a new front tire on, the front end has got a annoying wobble/pulsation when riding down the road. I balanced it once, but no help. So I may rotate the tire a bit and start over....
Hopefully it will last but will be doing the head soon. When I broke ithe 400 in I took it easy and no constant throttle. I hope this holds up for you, kinda feel bad. Tha orange bike rocks. Trying to plan a long dual sport ride this weekend.

Nothing wrong with the stock carb that proper jetting and a good fuel filter will not fix. I have had four xr4s and after jetting each and one that was severely clogged I have had zero issues.

On the flip side of that..... my son and I have had 2 400s, a '96 and an '02,still have a '96. In each case, dumping the stock carb for an aftermarket, a MIkuni 34mm flat slide non-pumper for the '96, an Edelbrock for the '02, BIG improvement across the board.

I'll let you know what I think once I get it installed. I know that my carb is probably ok, and just needs the pilot jet cleaned, but the starting bit is a huge pain, and needs to be resolved. I have an XR250R that I loved as a kid, except it could get very temperamental about starting. I am still scarred from that. Let's hope the new carb resolves the issue.

Thanks for the info mate, I'll pop the part over to my Yam dealership and see if they have anything.
I'll post something up if I'm successful.

I was able to ride this weekend in Pachaug, CT. The bike started on the 3rd kick Saturday morning with a little shot of starter fluid. When unloaded off the trailer at the trail head it started first kick. No starter fluid needed!
(after carefull use fo compression release for 5-10 kicks and a little lift of slide via idle adjustment screw. This baby just wants to be run!! Might be a little rich even.

I have the carb kit on hand now and a float needle. Gonna hold off on replacing them and ride more for now. Berkshires Big Adventure Rally in 3 weeks. Probably will need to address sprocket sizes after this one. She climbs like a billy goat!

The only thing that kept me from completing the NETRA loop at Pachaug was rider fatigue. Those bolder fields are tiresome. we got ~25 miles in with some wrong turns for a 35 mile total. Great weather and we had the place to ourselves. The water levels were all very low. Lowest I've seen.
Thanks for the helpful advice.
Jason

If I remember right, the bearings are sealed and rather difficult to pack grease into them..I reckon it can be done..I replaced mine two yrs ago as I thought it was time to do so..YMMV
