this always helps me sleep better. hollow points 32 rounds in 2 clips. night night for me and the bear hopefully! Also bear spray has been deemed uneffective. Small caliber gun may not do all that much to a bear but is sure a whole-hellaofalot better than a stick!

what if you shot him in the face or head? What else could you do? It would be much more appropriate I gues to have an elephant gun

We lived in Colorado for ten years, near Alma, and had Bears come up in the yard, in the spring and summer. They were black bears and mostly I think just looking for something to eat. We noticed them right after the thaw when there wasn't much growing yet. I had big dogs, Malamutes, and the bears were not very afraid of them, they would just kind of wander around sniffing the with the dogs barking. One time I thought I would take the hand gun out and scare the bear away. The wife and kids were terrified when the bears would come around, so, I went out side and blasted a few rounds into the air from my trusty .22 cal. pistol. The bear ran around my p.u. truck and then stood up and looked over the hood right at me, sniffing. I then yelled, hey bear, git outta here, git,you sombitch and fired one more round into the air. The bear then got down on all fours, turned and walked slowly away, across the yard and out on to the road.
Most of the camping I did in the Rockies was during Elk or Deer season. We always had plenty of people around and made lots of noise, plus it was in the late fall, we never had any problems with bears. Camping alone,in the spring, bears could be a concern. Take care of your food, the way others have sugessted, make plenty of noise and take a gun if you want. Not sure it would really help in and emergency, but it might help you sleep better.

As Mike mentioned, bear spray should be an option. It can be used against most any animal you feel threatened by and is probably legal to carry anywhere in North America at least. I am not sure about Europe.
If I am in areas that have grizzlies (which is not that large in the lower 48) I keep a 44mag or Ruger 45 colt revolver with handloads. Some of the loadings for the 45 colt (not to be confused with the 45 acp that is used in the 1911 style handguns) meet or exceed a 44 mag but you need the right strong gun. I also use hard cast bullets in my handloads. You need penetration not expansion. I have a few guns that are chambered for these rounds and all but one can be carried concealed. At the camp I keep a Marlin Guide gun in 45/70 with hard cast bullets. If someone wants to learn more about this topic send me a pm. I have some interesting links.

You are at the top of the food chain, act like it

I am not a city boy. Lived, worked and played in the country all my life. Been swimming with gators and sharks been nose to nose with bears and hogs. None of them have ever wanted to eat me. In my opinion you don’t need a gun in the country unless you’re hunting. That being said the most dangerous weapon I carry in the woods unless hunting is a machete. If there is a critter around I don’t want around I just stand upright and let them know I am there and they usually leave. If they don’t leave like some curious bears have not when I have been cooking (usually in some state park because some dumb ass has been feeding them), I make some noise they are not used to like bang on a cook pot with a spoon and walk toward them. They leave. NEVER run from an animal, it triggers a natural reaction that will make them chase you. You just took on the action that their food does. You are the dominate species, act like it and you will be fine. Now in the city you need protection. I prefer a compact model 27 .40 Glock with Golden Saber hollow points and a Pearce PG-2733 clip extender. Super reliable, fairly accurate and loads of knock down power.

fate

follow the directions above and you've nothing to worry about. A guide once told me If you bring a gun, take three parts of ammo:

1 Blank to scare the bear, 1 rubber round to deter the attacker, 1 real one for yourself when they're gnawing on your head

What do you bring for camping? both for safety and for comfort.

mayby someone have a link to a list of what would be good to bring camping when on motorcycle.
So let's try to keep it generic, eh?

Air Horn

An air horn could probably deter curious animals. They are fairly small and extreamly loud.

wow, you have alot of faith in a .32. Hollow points at that! The skull of a bear is thick, dense and the right angle to deflect a pretty big round. You stand a better chance of pissing the bear off with that pea shooter than defending yourself.

given a charging bear, I'd take pepper spray any day!
