Hi All
I will be over from the U.K. visiting my Mother in San Antonio in April, and would like to hire a motorcycle while I'm over. I know I can rent a hog from my last visit a couple of years ago, but is there anywhere in the vacinity where I can get hold of a GS or something a bit more sporting to play with? The wife and kids can't make the trip this time so I fancy a bit of a ride out and explore.

I'm afraid not. The last folks to rent BMW's in San Antonio went out of business about a year ago. Two years ago I rented an R1100R from them, while my buddies rented Harley's. It's a big reason I'll being buying one in January. Good luck finding a BMW rental.

Thanks Jory
I guess the guys that went out of business were Alamo m/cycles, as I 've found their link on google a few times but could't get any further. So a Harley it will have to be, which is the least tractor like (on the basis that the Vrod doesn't seem to be an option from the rental outlets)? My only Harley experience was taking an 883 sportster out a few years back which left me underwhelmed to say the least. How can an engine that big supply so little go

That's hard to say, I don't know much about Harley's and like you, I would assume a sportster would be about as close as you could get to fun. You may have better luck trying to rent something in Austin - 70 miles up the road (the riding around Austin is phenominal by the way)
Yeah, I was really surprised when I rented the R1100R - 300 mile day in the saddle and absolutely no butt pain and quite a sporty ride. I really liked it! However I will be purchasing a GS in February, being so close to Mexico and Big Bend. Again good luck in finding a rental. Jory |

Bike Share
You might consider this: http://www.bikeshareworld.com/member.../home_info.htm It's basicly a co-op where members can borrow another members bike, while offering any other member the same. I'd try to find out if there's a member in SA, first though. I don't belong, but there is a strong BMW representation in the group. If you do this, let us know how it works out.

In San Antonio, you can rent a V-Rod at Alamo City Harley-Davidson. As noted above, Alamo Rentals (which used to rent BMWs) is out of business.
In Austin, the folks at Austin Harley-Davidson rent V-Rods. Two other rental outlets - Street Eagle and EagleRiders - have gone out of business. In Houston, try Exotic Cars. Hope this helps.

I've had mine for several years now. It will never replace my Harley (yeah, I am one of "those" guys! :): That ol' rat-bike has carried me too many miles to let her go now!) but I really enjoy the change-of-pace of riding the Beemer. Sweet handling, very responsive, and I love the luggage system! Now that I've been lurking around this site, however, that GS and a little desert riding is starting to look pretty good, too! Maybe when the R1100R is paid off, eh?

Thanks for the info guys, I'll let you know how I get on. What is/where is Big Bend that I've seen on a couple of threads. Someone was talking about a ride in April.

Be sure to post up when you get here. If I'm in town I'll buy you a beer or five.
