Prince Train Station

This place was deserted when we first got there. By the time we left it was packed. You wouldn't believe the number of folks who still travel by rail in these mountains.

On the nine-foot

We took several roads that the locals call nine-foot. It's two tracks wide with a nine foot strip of pavement down the middle. It's okay until you meet someone coming the other way. SHIT! Everyone we met was in a 4WD going at lightspeed and our scariest encounter was just before this store.

Last photo

This was our last photo of the first weekend. It was raining pretty hard but stopped long enough for this shot. It's also featured in the calendar but this frame is pre-edit. We had so much damn fun that we decided we'd have to come back just one more time before summer was over. Twist my arm Brian!

Weekend Two

As I said before we had so much fun the first weekend we figgered another trip was in order. We cut across southern Ohio to get to Beckley again for our first overnight of the weekend. Along the way I'm always looking out for Mail Pouch Barns. They're a favorite of mine. I also have made good friends with Roger Warrick. He's the son of Harley Warrick who painted over 10,000 of these barns. If you're traveling the eastern US and have picked your routes then it would be a good idea to try out this website. http://www.ohiobarns.com They have a comprehensive listing of Mail Pouch Barns, old mills, covered bridges and other structures of Americana.

New River Bridge

We planned a loop of West Virginia this trip but couldn't resist doing the New River Bridge loop again. This time we could see the sky.

West Virginia Morning

The next day we headed east on Rt3 out of Beckley. We rounded a corner just as the sun broke the horizon and stopped here to take in the beauty and smoke a coupla cigars. It don't get much better than this.

Just the Vic

What you can't see from this angle is a house that sat down in the valley just below the road. While we were stopped the couple who lived there walked out onto their porch and grabbed the morning paper and sat in the lawn chairs to take in the morning. Both extended a friendly wave. Cool to have to see this everyday of your life, eh?

Alderson Train Station

This is the whistle stop in Alderson, WV on Rt3. Probably more train stations concentrated here than any other place I've been.

Big Bend Tunnel

Still on Rt3 and just up the road from Alderson is this monument to Big John Henry. The tunnel runs directly under the highway here.

John Henry was a steel driving man

Cool to see that legends really did exist. How many of you heard the story but never knew where it happened or if it was just a myth?
