Just watched two large grizzlies...

Shadowing a horseback rider w/ another horse in tow. Saw it out the downstairs window at the house.

Whoever that was on the horse owes a debt of gratitude to a couple of vehicles that harassed the bears for a couple minutes while the rider slipped out toward the Upper O'Malley trailhead.

If you like hiking in the Chugach know that I see a ton of black bear here every year but rarely a brownie. Last year was a total of one and this year it's two. They're out there though and although they'll thin the black bears out which is a good thing... they'd be a booger to run into. Watch your six near the Chugach trailheads this year toward O'Malley / Glen Alps / DeArmoun / Canyon, etc.

They look like very well fed 2 year olds to me.

Eh? Bears

That is scary.

I only saw one Grizzly in the 15 years I lived on the hillside.
We had black bears regularly pass through our yard and one mama busted up the door on the garage side but didn't come in.
No problem, they were just the average black bears.

That one brown bear was the only one that had me nervous...
It was HUGE.
Looked to be the size of a small car but I am sure that was just the distortion of my eyes bulging out as I stood still in the driveway...

Very fortunate for the horses and rider that the cars came along.

Yikes!
Seemed to be a lot of blackies around us down here 3 & 4 years ago or so. One popped up twice right outside my kitchen window that, per my 3' high woodbox, was at least 3 feet tall at the shoulders. Huge! Gettin' shot in the butt with a powerful BB gun or having one neighbor's big dogs nippin' at his ass didn't faze him a bit.
A few reports of browinies too but not many. I'm not far from Rabbit Creek where they've been electronically tracked.
Never saw a brownie in my yard. Don't want to either.

Then there is the guy around the corner that leaves his garage door open all the time. Comes out the man door from house to garage. Hello bear!
Blackie left out the open back man door of the garage.
He still leaves his garage door open.

How were those horses acting, Legion?

The horses were moving along single file at a fairly good pace but short of a trot. I'm not sure how they might not have noticed but they weren't spooked. The rider seemed to have a pretty tight focus though.

The two vehicles were the trick. My wife was cranked about the two vehicles harassing the bears and I didn't say anything but had I been on that horse I'd have given my left nut for a third vehicle harassing those boys. They were of a size that you don't normally see together and if they both worked as a team I bet that could have gotten pretty ugly pretty quick.

WTF? Yeah, very ugly. Could have got the horses & the rider too. That rider really needed the help.

Can't help but wonder if these were part of the group that mauled the hiker a couple days ago out toward Bird.

Maybe I just didn't seen Mama when I spotted the two older bears?

I know the guys at Bird that run the ATV rides.... griz in question there was a sow with 2 cubs & have been hanging around there all year, they are actually a regular attraction on the tour. I scoped them on the side of the mountain (from the attack site) last month with my 2 Aussie friends.
