The DT230 has a sweet little motor - great fun on a track like this

The final instalment - all tanks to Glen for the video editing (I don't have the patience)

Now I can do my Reefton RR....

I'm guessing Waynes track isn't ridden much.

It looks like Makairo for little bikes.

Correct - most people have too much sense
the video doesn't really show how steep (downhill) most of it is.

I don't actually like it much as I always fall off on the climb out of the first stream crossing but my son was really keen so....

Reefton 3rd-6th Oct

Sunday 3rd

Andy rang on Thursday to find out where we were riding on the weekend and we decided that the rare upcoming 4-5 days fine weather window shouldn't be wasted with stupid stuff like work

So we jumped onto the Sunday 8.30 ferry to Picton and headed off via the Wairau Valley to St Arnaud for lunch.

We were pleased to see that Nordieboy had travelled down from Nelson to join us for the afternoon's ride.

From St Arnaud we headed off down to Howard Valley Rd where Andy and I aired down tires while Nordie polished his racing slicks.

And then onto the awesome Porika

Nordie and Andy took the hard way to the top

We all headed down to the lake which was stunning as always

My partners in crime - Nordie (Fran) and Andy

I found the limits of my worn E07 rear

The lake was a bit full

Nordie had to make tracks home so Andy and I head out via the Braeburn Track and Mangles Valley to Murchison.

I was feeling pretty rooted (perpetual cold on and off for months - 3rd lot of antibiotics....) so I decided to head straight to Reefton while Andy headed over the Maruia Saddle Rd.

We I must have been tired as I missed the turn off to Inangahua and instead headed up SH65 towards Springs Junction. I didn't realize I'd made a mistake until I saw the Maruia Saddle Rd sign - WTF??? - oh well it must be meant to happen - so I headed of over the saddle to meet/suprise Andy.

Its a truly great road

We got to Springs Junction about 6pm and headed off to Reefton via the sport bike heaven of SH7 - what a great way to finish the day.

Struan (XF650) met at us the Reefton Autolodge where we all had a good pub roast and a well earnt beer.

I fell asleep fully clothed with the lights on at about 9.30.....

Reefton 3rd-6th Oct

Monday dawned bright and clear and after a nice brekky of bacon and eggs and a swimming pool sized latte we loaded up

And headed off to Big River

It was a tad chilly so about 100m in Andy decided to turn himself into an iceblock by doing a belly flop into this puddle.

Struan was taking things easy as it was his first time back on his bike in serveral months.

but he easily kept pace with me on the KLR

Its a great track - lots of puddles etc

but we were all finding it very "jolty" - So Struan decided to 'fiddle with his bits'

We all got to the end and have a breather and in Andy's case a boot drain.

The accommodation is not improving

But the riding more than makes up for it.

Once we got back to the beginning of the track I was feeling a bit 'off' so I headed off back to Reefton for a latte and snooze while Struan and Andy found some great tracks to play on...

They finally got back to our digs about 3pm and had some much earned refreshments

About 4pm we decided to head out and explore one of my favourite tracks - Waitahu River

There were a few trees down

So we navigated around them

Struan decided his bike needed a wash - via total immersion

So being bastards Andy and I abandoned him to the sandflies

And headed off to explore - it got a bit rocky

We got to a point where we had had enough.

As the way ahead was looking a bit challenging for us pussies

So we headed back and helped Struan drain the water from his headlight before heading back out

We headed back to Reefton and while Andy and I drank Andy's beer Struan drained the white milk out of his water cooled gearbox.

What a great day - finished off by another good pub roast of the day and more beer....

fantastic RR Mark. Good to see the old boys out again. It's a bugger when illness gets in the way of a good ride aye.

Did you stop at the same place as we did during the invasion?

Excellent pics well done

Nice work Mark

Glen's videos of Waynes track total just 45 minutes , guess the extra 4 hours of heavy panting, camelback sucking, museli bar munching & bitching isn't entertainment?
After hitting that branch my bicep has a huge multicolour bruise, fortunately I was wearing a pressure suit otherwise I might have been impaled on it!

Was a great ride but feeling 'off' does reduce your ability to enjoy it - in the big scheme of things it fits into the 'minor shit happens' category :)

We went about 500mts beyond where we got to last time - the boulders don't get any easier...

I got my local bike shop to order it in from 454 unlimited in Christchurch. Cheap at $115. Its a meaty bitch of a thing

Its already lost a bit of edge after just one ride so the jury is out on its longevity

Wayne Track is officially off my list of 'tracks I can be talked into doing'

Better a multicoloured shoulder than a broken collarbone - pressure suits sure makes a difference - I feel naked without mine.

Reefton 3rd-6th Oct

Tuesday - another cool crisp and slightly foggy morning starting with a decent feed at the Cafe

We stuffed around a bit and finally left about 9.30. The 50km run south to Ngahere was a tad nippy and I was glad to have heated grips and a big screen to hide behind.

We headed down Nelson Creek Rd to the gravel leading to Lake Hotshitter

We eventually got to the lake

Cool plaque(sp?) near the lake

Some awesome tracks nearby - although my worn T64 front did its best to discolour my undies

We eventually made our way via Lake Haupiri to Kopara

The Kopara post office

Lunch at Kopara

Then off to explore some lumpy tracks opposite Lake Haupiri

The track deteriorated and became klr unfriendly

So we extracted Andy's bike

And headed back to Haupiri Rd

From there it was off to Lake Brunner for gas and a coffee/pie

Before heading out to the main road via some great forestry roads near Notown Rd.

Then it was straight back up to Reefton for me and back via a couple of detours for Andy and Struan and another pub roast followed by a couple of beers and a few rums (thanks Andy).

fell asleep with the light on again (I blame the rum)
