Sounds like where I live, summer weekends is SXS, quads and straight piped Harleys all the time.
I actually saw two guys go by on quads last year with their (little) kids strapped in baby seats on the back racks of the quads.
I shit you not

Kids small enough to fit in a baby seat, with too big bicycle helmets on their heads.
On state route 72 in the city limits.

If I get ticketed on the EXC I'll take it to court and make such a fuss that there will be no quads running around either.
Rarely do any of these idiots ever wear even a helmet, and I bet a field sobriety test would be interesting.

Sheriff deputy finally stopped two kids that were running up and down the road last summer.
One on a quad, the other on an XR80. They are 12 and 14 years old, no lights on either machine, no gear on either kid.
We did dumb shit when we were kids, but actually got in trouble for it.

there are states that tag (limited) quads and utvs
its a good source of incame for the states

all the local motorcycle rules apply to them.

i was riding a back road the other day
some wanker was flying on his quad , i noticed he was sitting to one side.
that is when i noticed the left rear tyre was flat

this handicap did not seam to phase his pace any, i sped up a bit to see how this ended. he nearly stacked it more than once.
the evil quad wreck would have made the news if it gotten any worse.

the dumb ass had no gear, helmet, gloves, ect
like so many other thing out there , its not the machine its the human that is using it!

you can ride on any unlined road in putnam county (the way I understand it) on a quad or sxs without a helmet because there is no law against it. Now, get on a street legal bike (tags, ins.,drivers license, etc..) not wear a helmet and get a ticket. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to debate helmet laws or anything, just the law doesn't make any sense!

For some reason they see those death traps as a lot safer than a bike, I guess because you don't have to balance them??

Those things are the reason I hardly ride dirt on weekends anymore.
Always a bunch of drunk/stupid assholes out riding way to fast on dirt roads.

I'm at the far right on every blind corner and slow way down.
Had 4 SXS about run over us last summer on a county road, they came over a blind hill about 40 and if I wouldn't have been nearly in the ditch the lead one would have hit me head on.

They were dead center on a single lane dirt road, then they looked at us like we were the idiots.

Here is the " Basic " Law. It basically says you can ride anywhere but a 2 laned Highway. If you read deeper into the law

You can ride upto 10 miles between trail heads on paved roads

Big money for the State

West Virginia

State Laws:
  • All ATVs must be titled.
  • All riders under 18 must complete a rider safety awareness course.
  • All riders under 18 shall wear helmets at all times.
  • ATV use is banned from paved roads with a center line or more than 2 lanes, except to cross and except for getting from one trail or field to another when traveling up to 10 miles no faster than 25 mph.
  • No passengers are permitted except if the ATV is designed for a passenger or if the passenger is at least age 18 and the operator is at least 18 and has a driver's license.
  • ATVs shall not be operated from sunset to sunrise without a lighted taillight and headlight.

I Don't agree with the Law.

But I don't think you will see it change anytime soon. Maybe it's a Darwin thing

We had a guy run into one last week at HMT.

The guy in the sxs was staying at the cabin next to us. We were talking to him and he was like yea, some guy laid it down and slid into me. Later on when we caught up with our second group of guys, the one was like 'yea, I ran into a sxs this morning' Coincidence? Nope.

SXS guy had a gopro running and I got the video off of him.

In that situation where the bike hit the SXS, if I were on the bike I would have been hugging the right edge of the road.

Sucks I know, but if you ride where others are going to play you have to realize that you ain't the only one around.

In brighter news, I have a Powerball ticket. When I win I'm buying a bunch of land and all the trails will be singletrack.

And it will in invitation only.

You guys are invited

So I put on my bicycle ride today, it went great. There was a ride for motorcycles today also starting at Riverside in Winfield. I was driving back off of the ridge RTE34, and here comes a county sheriff with his lights on towards me so I slow down and pull aside. Following behind was the Harley's from the ride from Winfield. Really, do they need escorted? Yes it's good that it is a charitable ride like my bicycle ride but the Harley's were splitting the lane and expecting everyone to get out of their way. I only saw a couple of riders with leathers or any kinda protection and one of them was on a sport bike. I wonder how many of these riders would ride if it was under 70 degrees? There is no way I would want to ride with a pack like that. One mistake and your minced meat or worse.
So now I will hear about the bicycle riders

Speaking of invitations to ride more. Trip fell through Hillbilly- I think the guy sold the truck from under me in the last week before heading out of town. Summer plans are not going down the way I had planned. Still pretty pissed with my neighbor about the electrical job and had to give him my two cents worth. To make short of it you better start getting a hold of me when you in town. Need to get back to summer riding in the mountains.

I don't agree with the law, but it really comes down to the idjit on the quad. I have had more than my share of trouble with them where I live. Now I see Razors everywhere. We as bike riders are not the majority, that's for sure
Every police officer I have ever talked about ATV Helmet Laws and Usage Laws has told me one thing.......there is no way they are going to chase a helmetless kid who is going to open up the bike, find the first narrow escape route, or worst of all wreck and kill themselves.

It isn't worth it to them. I would never want to have to explain myself in a civil court (where you would most likely end up for a wrongful death civil suit). Pursuit rules apply here and the days of chasing people are long gone unless it is a very serious offense. Evading a police officer because you don't have a helmet doesn't meet that qualification.

WV Legislature knew this however they made it law in effort to feel good about themselves and at the same time secure votes.

ATV Usage and Helmet Laws are a grand waste of time. Good intentions riddled with politics.

The only enforceable helmet laws is the one where my son asks me, do I need to wear a helmet?......and I give him the look. He knows its mandated here at home, but I am sure with peer pressure he has ridden helmet-less.
