My son caught a 20" Brown off the dock last week. Fishing is good...the riding is great!

Hey M.A.M.

I just got home from 3 days floating the Buffalo with my sons. The oldest goes to Iraq in Jan. and we're just doing things together until that time. His platoon leader went with us and we got into a discussion about the White River. I remembered that I had bookmarked your post and got home and checked out exactly where your cabin was.

Long story short, I'll be getting in touch soon.

The Buffalo is a wonderful float. We have our own little Buffalo called Piney Creek that flows into the White just below my cabin...great smallmouth stream. I'm headed up this morning to spend a week at the cabin and hope to have some fish pictures to add. The Corp of Engineers is about done with the lake drawdowns plus they are adding habitat just below Bull Shoals Dam so we will have low water beginning about the 1st of August. Send me an e-mail when you think you might want to come up and I will give you some info on the riding and fishing in the area. I have some GPS loops from the cabin that are a lot of fun for dual sports and also some paved loops for the great twisties around the area. It's also a great place to watch the river go by and do simply nothing but relax.
My regards to your son and his service to our country.

FINALLY!!!
The White River is wadeable again. After 18 months of record floods and high water from constant discharges the White is back to normal. Generation for power on an as-needed basis now. This has been promised several times over the last few months but finally the lakes are back to normal pool.
Want a place to fish away from the crowds with good wadeable water and lots of good-sized fish?? PM or e-mail me. Oh yeah...the riding is damn good too!

Pic from a webcam at a resort near the dam. I haven't seen those gravel bars in months.

Fishing Report....
Was at the cabin from Wednesday to Saturday this past week. Power generation from Bull Shoals and Norfork Lake has been the typical late Summer pattern...Generation in the afternoon for a few hours then shutting down for the evening until mid-day the following day. The result is low water in the mornings thru noon to mid-day then up a couple of feet through the evening. Temps this week will be in the 70's with overnight lows in the mid to upper 50's. This should result in even less generation. I fished the area in front of the cabin, never venturing more than 200 yards up or downstream. Thursday evening I landed 10-12 nice rainbows and browns in the span of 90 minutes and lost probably half that as I was using barbless hooks. Friday morning was spectacular, I waded into the river about 7:15am and left the water around 11:00 am. I hooked into over thirty fish, maybe more as I lost count. The first couple I caught were on hoppers but I soon switched as it was a little slow. I tied on a small, black wooly booger and that's when the action got hot. First cast produced a fish from the riffles beyond some big boulders just under the surface mid-river adjacent to deeper water. I changed flies once, and that was another wooly booger as I finally lost the original fly on a very hard strike (should checked my knot after so many fish). Most of the fish were in the 12 to 14 inch range....no big fish this time but they are there waiting. I did hook into a good sized brown the evening before but he threw the hook after making a couple of line-peeling runs downstream. A whole lot of fun and right out the door too. Pics.......I was alone and all I had was my I-phone and I didn't want to chance dropping it in the water with a rod in one hand and a net and fish in the other. Will rectify that with a designated photo taker next trip.
Send me an e-mail if you want to do some fishing in a beautiful, peaceful setting.

WOLF HOUSE in NORFORK

Glad to find this option for lodging in the Norfork area. Our family attends
the Wolf Family Reunion in June each year.
My great-grandmother, Mary Arkansas Wolf was born in and married in the
Wolf House, and my grandfather stayed & played there as a kid.
We stayed last year in some group cabins on the Norfork, but I might
like the privacy of a single cabin. I think I will check with one of my
cousins to see about going in on a stay at your place.
Hopefully by next year I will have a KTM 530 XC-W plated for dual sport
use in area.

That's really cool....I've passed the Wolf House several times going back and forth through the Norfolk area but I've never actually stopped to take a closer look. I saw on a Baxter County website that the Wolf house is the oldest public structure in Arkansas. Just down the road from my cabin is a historical marker for the long gone town of Athens, which I believe became the county seat for Izard county after it moved from your ancestors location. The brother of Texas' Sam Houston was a county official for Izard county in the early 1800's .
My place is not too far from Norfork so let me know next time you come up.

Chris
