You sound like you want some unsolicited advice... so here it is

In sand you need to stay on top of it or else you'll just plow around, put your butt toward the back of the seat to keep the front light. I find it most comfortable in 3rd gear in the middle of the power and use light steering input it might not respond right away so be prepaid for that.

If you want we could go to Gorman sometime and ride the sand washes.

Cool - 3rd gear, middle of the power, on the 990 that should put me right around...70 mph...no problem!

That'll help keep you up on top of the sand and not plowing through it

I was having problems with the bike all weekend. Basically low power and it was bogging. Mostly I thought it was due to jetting and altitude. I got to a point on Silver Canyon where the DR would not pull me up a 30 degree easy slope in first gear. I tried changing the jets but it did not help. At some point I sat on the bike and it rolled backwards while in first gear and I could hear the engine turning. At that point I realized that it was not the carb. I had checked the valves and tested the bike at home before leaving so that is probably not the problem. I won't have a chance to look into it for a few days.

sunday ride

while many were still in their beds, we opted to sleep less to beat the onslaught of a hot day in bishop. since we all live in socal, might as well truck the bikes to bishop.

breakfast before driving down to the staging area on silver canyon

the highway was wide open, but beware there was a police car lurking. normally, i would speed up but having rruuger in the group trailering, we all kept it below 70. he actually saved us all from getting tickets....

who is this guy driving the free pickup?........

as soon we made a turn into silver canyon, we can see the trail is already smoking...

the group moved fast but i was able to take pics on our way on silver canyon...

looking back where we started

so far, i made it this far..

jon and i have to stop at the bottom of the steep hill climb due to traffic

here's the famous steep hill climb; it seems in better shape this time than last year

we got halfway to the top and took a break and more pics..

grup poto...

and the cast...

eric

mike

john

tom

jon

the only nOOb...

the view of the valley below

then came the norcal riders

more later...

I started my own ride report since I spent most of my time wallowing through dirt on my own: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606681

Here's a video. Youtube is getting funcky on me and says it's still processing (since last night) but it works OK in my browser. Someone please post up and let me know if it runs OK and if the music track is there. Thanks.

after silver canyon, we rode to barcroft station

the road we have to take...

very tempting to go fast

though looks empty, this the terrain was diverse

it was long stretch and feels good to be on a med size bike

there were campers along the way

made it to the staion, the ride was a wonderful experience and chasing the 950/990s was fun..

mike and eric

me, eric, and jon

though i have a feeling she started from the station - 1) i didn't pass her 2) still looking fresh

mike showing the super glue he used to fix his tire's sidewall...

checking out the station

thanks to the volunteers for providing refreshments... ; it surely helped us

and cookies...good tasting

inside you'll see the following, and office

an infirmary

kitchen

shop

exhibits

tune in, more to come...

Thanks for posting the pictures of the station for those of us who were too worried about time to make it all the way
