Sorry, I completely spaced it. It happened @ Kennedy meadows last year. the the filament collapsed, and the damned thing welded itself together at the metal arms that hold the filament. It was such a weird thing and it was end of the road for that POS, so I completely forgot about it.

Maybe yours isn't 'welded' but they touch with a good bump?

Step 2. Cut the fuse out and Wire Nut the 2 wires back together.

Step 3. Ride the bike around town like a nut case jumping curbs and stuff.

Step 4. Wait for the wire to burn up, usually the wire will burn up back to the short.

Step 5. Now that you found the short replace and repair all the parts you burned up.

Option : After step 3 loosen the fuel line and make sure their is plenty of gas all over the wiring and engine. When the short happens the bike will burst in to flames. At this point you will need to jump off the bike. Once off the bike grab your cell phone and call the closest KTM dealer and tell them you are in the market for a new bike.

Get that bike fixed and get your ASS to Arrowhead! I can always bring the 950 and you and Cathy can ride together!
This plan with the option is my next course of action if the problem persists.

See you in the morning. Watch for smoke.

No, I'm in. I'll see you in the morning. I'm just heading up the 18 which you can take to the 173 but I'm going to cut through on Grass Valley Rd to the 173. You can probably trust the Google maps guy. He's generally a good guy.

Try some of this:

We had most of the bike apart trying to find anything out of the ordinary. But it's a 610, so of course everything was in great shape. No signs of frayed wires or chaffed insulation or anything else. Nothing caused spikes or drops in any of the readings. No continuity issues. In fact, there really wasn't anything that seemed like it could cause those fuses to blow. The only thing that we could find that maybe was the cause was the battery. If I was banging the bike around enough there is a slight chance that the battery could have moved and shorted against a clip nut on the fender. So we covered that with a [bold]custom plastic bottle cap[/b], taped to the fender, to create a barrier between the two. Sorry, no pictures, patent pending. I also disconnected my additional electronics just in case.

So I will be heading to Big Bear in the morning with Randy. I'm packing extra fuses. If they start blowing, I will just turn around and come home. I'm optimistic that everything will work perfectly.

Thanks again everyone, especially RandyM, for all of your help and suggestions.

sounds like a KLR fix!!!

we were still about 20 dirt miles to pioneer town @ 2:30pm when the group made the smart decision to turn around. then we headed to big bear city and had lunch.

of the 16 riders started in the morning, 8 of us completed the ride. i woul guess we did about 150 miles of dirt last sat....

it was all good, no carnage and no serious injury. what's great about the ride was seeing others helping others (i got most of the receiving part... ).

the only screw up we did was left edelweys in the shade while trying to kickstart his xr650 and the rider in front didn't wait for him when we got off the main highway..... the good side...andreas was the only one (and cathy also) who got to pioneer town....

sept 18-19 pinnacles/big bear ride

the fun weekend started saturday morning here at the pinnacle...an ohv area north of lake arrowhead. the objective is to ride to pioneer town on as much as 90% dirt. lots of intermediate riders showed up who will experience a lot of first time experience on a lot of things, i.e. water crossings, single track, quad trails, rock garden, etc.

the weather was perfect...blue sky and temp in the mid 70s...

i thought the turnout will be small. about 16 riders showed up....

the route started on a med difficulty fs road...

considering the size of the group, we were organized and tried not to lose anyone. waiting at the junction was the norm...

not matter what, those orange bikes look pretty

Nice recovery, Riceless!

Never made it to Pioneer Town for the "gun fight" for various reasons- 1 being my incompetence on finding 2N02 so we settled for lunch in Big Bear.

I walked away with some bumps & bruises and a little more skill on handling single track

Until next time...

it was hard for me to stop and take pics since the pace of the group was fast and my hands were on the handlebars all the time. i tried as much as i can, and the next op was at devil's hole.

here's pablo equipped with a big flotation device disguised as an 8-gal tank

edelweys getting ready for his turn; those long legs came in handy (or should i say leggy... )

dunerat being a good sport with a bad leg joined the fun

not really a big deal for dr, he had done this crossing many times

luke aka eggroll

eggroll did well even though his bike stalled

good save but now wedged in the rocks

randyM came to his rescue...like a good neighbor, always there and willing to help...
