Look at those views at the end of 60 miles of dirt! Camera and hiking shoes mandatory.

That's what I'm talking about. But that's a long ride from here.

It's just shy of 500 miles from Huntington Beach.

A couple of questions:

The 60 miles of dirt......is it hard pack, sand or what? Big bikeable for a n00b?

When are you looking at going? If it is the right weekend I could do 3 maybe 4 days.

Any of you guys free thanksgiving weekend?

From the NPS site:

Sunshine Route (BLM road #109), the primary access route, leaves Highway 389 about seven miles/12km west of Fredonia. (6 miles east of Pipe Springs NM) It is 61 miles /100 km long and is the most reliable route, but is subject to washboarding and dust.

Road Conditions
All routes are secondary county roads, graded occasionally and generally in good condition. The last three miles across the slickrock are the roughest. Allow 2-3 hours travel time from the highway to the overlook. RVs, trailers, or low-clearance vehicles are not recommended. All routes may be impassable after heavy rains and are subject to flash flooding. Tire damage from sharp rocks is common. Dangerous curves are often unmarked, and posted mileages may be inaccurate. Since there are few, if any, year-round residents, assistance is not guaranteed on any route. Cell phone service is unreliable

I do but that's still undecided. We're still waiting on permits and a certificate of occupancy to decide if there will be a thanksgiving or not.

Damn, Jo - you just lit my fire. That road looks about as difficult as the one in Carrizo Plain National Monument but the scenery is outstanding!

Ya, I find that stopping overnight in The Valley of Fire, north of Vegas when the slab boredom is about to drive you nuts works well:
