Vern - I hope you heal up quickly so you can join us out near Randsburg again.

Here's Cribaby, his dad & uncle, Herrhelmet, and myself from this morning out there:

Wow, thanks for the update Eric. I wish I could be there, I know how helpful it is to have friends come to the hospital. I know I really appreciate you guys looking after him, and I'm sure he does as well.

Thank you

vern,

i'm glad you were able to get a top-notch specialist for your surgery. don't try to rush the recovery time ---- you're not exactly recovering from a bad hangnail, so just take your time and follow any rehab program they decide will suit you best. i've had to do physical rehab for some broken bones before, and a good specialist will push your limits, but knows not to exceed them. it will kick your ass!

i will get up there this week to see ya, and tell you about the story of me getting chased by the cops on your bike yesterday. good thing i told them my name was vern

talk to you soon, buddy

thanks eric. longer than what previously was planned (3 hours). this procedure was a lot better than what the other neurosurgeon recommended.

from what i understand, they fused the bones in the front and went behind and put a reinforcing plate. they turned him over, up side down and did one of the steps. amazing technique. glad he found a very good neurosurgeon and team.

thinking of seeing him tonight @ 6-7 pm. text or pm me if anyone wants to come. a group of 4 is max so we don't get him too excited....

On Saturday my old Kiwi roommate who's in town starting 2-1/2 months of holiday (Columbia, Antartica, etc) and I walked down the street in Redondo Beach, CA to get some coffee and grilled cheese when I spotted a fully loaded R80GS with UK plates. We stopped inside to introduce ourselves.

Meet David, Jill, and Nancy (the R80GS).

They started their trip by shipping their their bike to Halifax and have been on the road about 6 months crossing Canada and now the States.

Jill worked as reverse gear, but unfortunately did not make any beep beep noises.

And now they are off to Griffith Park. I offered them a place to stay but David was keen on getting out of Los Angeles traffic.

They had heard of ADV but haven't been posting here. However, they have been blogging their adventure here: http://travels-with-nancy.blogspot.com/. Next up is Central and South America.

Medical Treatment

Just some random thoughts based on Vern's experience:

I listened very carefully to Vern's first surgeon in Burbank. He stated that only the c5 and c6 were of issue and that he would have Vern in and out of surgery in 1.5 hours. He said he could schedule the procedure the next day and that Vern could leave the hospital 2 days after that.

To Vern's credit he immediately asked for a 2nd opinion.

Instead of the quick and easy, get home in a few days route, Vern opted to transfer to Cedars.

Now we hear that it was much more involved and serious than earlier reported.

Thank you for the life lesson Vern.

The other thing I learned is that if you are mobile enough to get directly to Cedars or UCLA, do not stop until you get there....

Ditto that advice. Don't let the locals mess with your spine. UCLA has some of the top spine carpenters in the nation. I know this by experience.

Get well Vern.
