The thing is i never had a bike with a chain (always driveshaft) and most likely will need some time to figure out how to clip the chain together and all the other greasy stuff that comes along (probably not a good idea to do in a parking lot :p )
I can help you tomorrow if you like around 5pm i have the tools and some links i will be in Torrance area we can meet
what size is your chain 520 0r 525 ?

honestly, we struggled too considering we were on big bikes with camping gear. the only consolation is if i crash, it will land on soft ground (forbidding the presence of rocks and bushes).

after i made it, my confidence level and skill went up by a notch.

My skill level on dirt is intermediate. I usually ride a 1100GS, and I don't do single-track and avoid deep sand and mud when possible.
I will be riding a rented KLR 650 for this trip. I am picking it up at 5 PM on Friday and have to return it 5 PM on Monday in LA, so that's my time frame. I don't go super-fast, but I don't stop a lot either.
Some roads I found so far are Saline Valley Road and some roads north of it, they seem to be not too technical and very scenic, but I am not sure where to go from there.

Duy, it wasn't a sand wash, it was practically a beach, Malibu Beach I would say...
I've been here before with Matt and I did it just fine but this time I guess camping gear didn't help. But still if we didnt stop in middle I would have done it...

Ofcourse teapot has something to say...
As I mention earlier on this thread it was a planned attack on my flawless riding weekend. I didn't lay the bike down not even once on this weekend and Joel got jealous. So him and Matt made their plans to take me down.
When we met the white Jeep on the road the driver (Matt) was waving to distract me while Joel stopped right in front of me leaving me no place to swirl. So I had to go off the road to prevent a crash with Joel from behind...
And that is the story...
Besides, the bike is still at 45 degrees, so it not a complete lay-down...

in all fairness, my hat is off to you ersin, you did good taming that loaded beast......

with my best ability on the 640, you were on my tail all the time. we were doing same speed, but it takes longer to stop that 500+ bike compared to mine, and that's why the teapot ended in the bush.

klr with street tires i will assume. easy dirt road is my first reaction.

ok, you don't really have plenty of time which means it will be best to take the straight route to SF with some easy but fast dirt riding.

friday night - get a motel between simi valley and ojai.

saturday morning - from ojai take hw33 (north) to maricopa. gas up in maricopa.

from there back track, then take carrizo plains (dirt),go northwest to hw58, go west then make a left on pozo rd. to pozo saloon for lunch. without a hitch, it will be noon by then. from there head back to hw 58 and ride west.

if you have a gps, i can make you a route up to santa maria.

contact scottmac from this ride report. he's from northern california and knows the back roads to get to carrizo.

have fun and wish you a pleasant ride.

leave the snow behind!

jeff, we need to hold another desert skill weekend. all we need is your time, and the l.a. crew will take care of the diesel.

big and small bike. haul the trailer, bring both berg and the S. sorry we blew it the last time. the PPs preferred to go riding rather than learn. this time it's 100% school and limited only to those who want to learn. pick a day in october or earlier date with cooler weather.

we can make it sooner and do it in mammoth; it will be cooler and the venue closer to you.
