So we will have a nice, but short O/R ride.

Does anybody have suggestions of other nearby dirt roads or trails accessible from the Gibraltar Road summit?
Online USFS Maps for the whole area:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisito...ndex.php#south

West Camino Cielo is also a lot of fun. From Gibraltar, ride back along the paved part of East Camino Cielo (west from Gibraltar) and either take Painted Cave down (stop for the petroglyph cave after the switchbacks) and back up 154 a mile or so to W. Camino Cielo, or ride all the way on E. Camino (past Painted Cave) to 154 at the top of the pass. Cross the Hwy and turn left onto Kinevan Rd (a cool little one lane paved rd) to W. Camino Cielo.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisito...s/south/16.php

This is what 8thdwarf was talking about. West Camino Cielo is paved along the ridge, but after the shooting range you'll be on to the dirt (5N19) all the way to the comm towers, then down some fun single lane pavement to Refugio Road. Lots of fun, great views, and a few side trails to enjoy. Good area to play. If the gate is open at Refugio Rd., then you can turn right and take dirt down into the Santa Ynez valley (Solvang/Hwy246). There is fuel there, and you can head back up Hwy 154 (I'd take Stagecoach Road, parallel to 154, as you get near the pass - and you can stop at Cold Springs Tavern). That will take you back up the old road to the pass and the intersection with Kinevan/Hwy154 and E. Camino Cielo.

W. Camino is usually always open (although there used to be a gate between the towers and Refugio Rd. that was removed years ago).

-

Also check to see if Arroyo Burro Rd (5N20). is open, that will take you down into the valley and Paradise Road. You might also be able to get to the west side of 5N15/Camuesa Rd that way if the access at Upper Oso/OHV trailhead is available. http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisito...s/south/17.php

Lots of good stuff, but the through options can be limited and the gates are the key. Another call to the ranger station (to check gate status for 5N20 & 5N15, not to mention the Refugio Rd gate, which may be County and not USFS) and you will have some additional options.

NOT always...

W. Camino is usually always open (although there used to be a gate between the towers and Refugio Rd. that was removed years ago).

It was not open this day and the bypass was difficult for the SE to negotiate!

Camino Cielo Rd. is an easy dirt road, most of it pictured here.

Lake Cachuma, as seen from Camino Cielo. The views ARE spectacular.

Enjoy the ride, I hope the gates are open for you guys!

Hey MadMax, I hope you can join us July 30.

BTW, how much do you like your SE? I'm thinking of moving up to a bigger ADV bike.

next weekend's ride

going coastal.....

july 15, 16 and 17 san simeon/nascimiento ride

ok folks, we have less than 1 week to plan and talk about the ride.

here's the 411...

the IN list: joel, jim (spa), duy, ersin, eric (fudge), and cathy

FRIDAY MORNING: leave here before noon, maybe meet at the tri-tip restaurant in ventura by noon. jim knows the name and addy of that joint.

take the 101 to 1 then at cayucos, we take the scenic back road to cambria. from cambria, enjoy the pacific coast and cool air to san simeon.

FRIDAY NIGHT: overnight at sands by the sea. we have 2 rooms booked for 6. bring a sleeping bag, you may need it. if you're just joining now, book a room yourself just for that night. the room is about $108/night + tax and others. it has fridge and microwave.

SATURDAY: explore the back roads between cambria and big sur.

SATURDAY NIGHT: overnight at sands by the sea. we have 3 rooms booked for 9. bring a sleeping bag, you may need it.

SUNDAY: ride home, eat good in the area, maybe the cold spring tavern in santa barbara or summerland beach cafe in summerland.

please post up early since i hate to see someone want's IN on thursday night!

Just did a ride Thursday, up 101 over G16 and down Hwy.1 from Carmel down to Cambria and back over 46 to home on the street bike, Sorry no pics. Surprised at the amount of traffic on a week day. School is out and vacations are in high gear.
