Looking out for each other

Its good to know you guys look out for each other, it's not something I've seen outside the confines of the Marine Corps very often.

Mike, aka "NowWhat", is one hell of rider and a true American and can dish it out and take it like the best of them. He has keen observation skills by pointing out that I ride like sheeeeeet, true observation. When I say he can take it, I mean he can take just ask Biggie

Did you really think I'd kiss Mikes ass that much without getting in one more shot?

The only open route from 166 in New Cuyama that I am aware of (portions of which may still be seasonally closed) is Cottonwood Rd/Bates Cyn to Sierra Madre/Miranda Pine/Colson Cyn (I drove this in the truck about 2 years ago). This puts you out near Santa Maria. None of those other backcountry routes from 166 or 33 are open to motorized travel as far as I know - never have been I don't think

9N11 (Santa Barbara/Big Pine Rd) sounds like it might be do-able on mountain bikes (since it bisects the two wilderness areas) but I don't think that motorcycles would be allowed on the middle section of this route. You will likely hit gates right as you enter the Nat'l Forest on 9N11. (See the multiple gates noted on the map):

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisito...s/south/02.php

If this is a bushwhack/ride-around-all-the-gates sort of route, then maybe you can make it, but I wouldn't encourage anyone to ride on closed trails. From my experience, the Paradise Rd/Upper Oso to Little Pine Mtn. road (Buckhorn OHV/9N11) is usually open in summer, but I'm fairly sure that it dead ends (locked gate) not far past Little Pine Mtn. The section that passes between the two wilderness areas has not ever been open to motorized travel as far as I know. (see gates on map):

As always, a call to the district office can help to answer any questions that you might have.

Yeah, ah I'm going to have to, um dissagree with you there bob. I just don't think he's the type of person we want in upper management.

He's extremely violent, he hits a lot of stuff. hard. Really kind of a
rageaholic, and don't even get me started on his pathetic T.P.S. reports.

33 and 166 area ride report

Many areas are closed due to fire damage and Forest Service cutbacks. But, there is plenty of riding to be had. Bates was closed due to fire damage. Plowshare Peak(Sierra Madre Road) was open but it is one way in and one way out unless you have a mountain bike and rack for your Dual Sport. There was a gnarly tree that fell across a blue moderate difficulty trail turning it into a double black diamond trail(Tinta Trail) that was located in the Dick Smith Wilderness area. It appears that the Forest Service lost interest in cutting a path about 1/4 of the way into it. There was no way I was going to do this on my KLR650 since you would fall 30 ft into the river bed if you didn't make it. It is doable but I would suggest on a 400 or smaller or on a trials bike.

My buddy I was riding with is a hang glider pilot so he knows the area better than most. He also knows the caretaker with a Honda 600 that would get you busted if you tried to get through like someone was talking about.

Almost all of the wilderness was burned in 2007 by the Zaca Fire.

Tinta Road Tree across single track trail. The side going in is worse than it looks on the vid. Coming back out side of the tree trunk appears pretty easy.
