Is it bad manners to skip Christmas with the family, immediate family? I want to go to Baja rather than Chicagoland for X-mas week. BTW, I just got laid and am still drunk. Lane split from downtown to Manhattan Beach after dozen beers. But yeah, drunk me is in on Baja trip. R**h and J**L, let's go.

Yeah but, I think you still need a real passport before you can get the card. I really do hope I'm wrong about this.

Looks like you don't need a passport to get the card. BUT, the card is only good for land and sea entry into the USA. Don't know if Mexico would recognize it.

http://travel.state.gov/pdf/ppt_pptCard.pdf

May as well get both if you're applying for it now.

Thanks for chimin' in Noel & Tim. But I'd really like to hear from somebody that has the card and whether they had to have a passport first. That is how I interpreted the stuff on the website. Guess I could just go to the post office and ask Postmaster Betty. She can be sorta ornery sometimes though.

coming from Washington State, i am quite familiar with this "passport card".

you do not need a passport to have a passport card.

before 9-11 and for a few years after, you could drive into Canada (and Mexico) with your U.S. drivers license (i had a WA license) and also fly into Canada and Mexico with your drivers license.

then they wanted to crack down on all the Osama's trying get into the country and do harm to you.

if you remember, a guy took the Clipper in from Victoria B.C. Canada over to Port Angeles, WA with a lot of explosive making materials and his plan was to blow up LAX and the Golden Gate Bridge.

so to make it easier on folks that were just traveling from US to Canada or Mexico, you could get a cheaper "card".

if you ever plan on traveling to other countries, just get a passport, but if it's just between here and Mexico, get the "card".
