Berdoo Canyon is a nice ride into Joshua Tree. 10 Freeway to the Dillon Rd. exit, approx 5 miles north, take a right on an unmarked asphalt road. Here's a link:

Berdoo Canyon leads you to Geologist Road or some such, which intersects with the "California Riding & Hiking Trail". Mike and I rode this as there were no signs that said "No Motorized Vehicles". Mike blew out a fork seal on one step up. I'm not sure if it's legal or not to ride it, but dayem it was fun. A couple of pretty challenging spots. Here's a link to that trail:
