After i bailed from the SCD ice-ride last Saturday, i went across Lil Tujunga up the asphalt past the firestation and helipad. Off to the right begins 3N17, which was dirt and had easy-to-ride snow in the shady sections. After a couple miles there's a fork. On the left was an open gate that led down a paved one-lane road (May Canyon Rd according to my Tom Harrison Map: http://tomharrisonmaps.com/)
This area was totally burned up, and i went back after a mile or so.

The right fork was the dirt continuation of 3N17 and led to the Wilson Canyon Saddle, which has an outhouse and parking area similar to the North Fork Saddle. Not far from here there was a 3-way fork, one went for a couple miles to a gate at the Santa Monica Conservancy. The other dirt road went southwest to some towers and then an open area that was great for practicing donuts and other drills. There were small hills/berms pushed by bulldozers from the recent fire, which made for some fun little jumps and easy air-catching moments. It was a hoot--wished you guys could have been there

Finally, there was another dirt road that went north of the the parking area, a double track that turned into a single track. I moved a large charred manzanita that had fallen on the trail. I turned around after a mile or so, thinking i would come back another time.
The entire dirt section is only about 6-7 miles, but it also included a some areas to play, as well as some hill climbs available that would be a challenge for anyone who needs a little extra dosage to their ride.

I was surprised to see that Joel was the only FF from the ride that made it to the party at Sopascat's place; thought they'd want to share their tales of derring-do

Look forward to seeing you guys on the trail . . .
--Dan

i had done that trail (those trails) earlier this year when i had first moved here.
surprised not all you FF's haven't ridden that.
it's fun, but like you said, Little T is the only way in and out.
some of those trails might or might not be motor vehicle legal.
i had a hiker lady yell at me that i was not supposed to be on it.
it was near a UCLA medical building.
there are ways down to the 210 or the 14 from there on some single track for the more adventurous.
i'd be down to make this sunday CHURCH ride there if you weekend(saturday) FF's don't.
there are some other trails off Little T i would like to explore.....

there were more wrecks in front than at the back. the FFs won't even take pictures of their dead bikes..... , i think yzlvr has some pics but hasn't posted any.

marty, the first part of the video was funny. you passed sergio with your 950 and hauled ass, and when you got to scd, the xt225 was still on your tail.....

He grew up in Quartz Hill. His uncle had a place out on 140th in Bean. Got to ride with him a few times up there(I grew up in Rosamond). When he first got his OW 39 or whatever they called it, there wasn't a hill he couldn't climb. Shreaded the rear tire in two days. When I first started riding up there around '77, I couldn't even make it a lap around some of the tracks he built to practice on. Those were the days of the real natural terrain mx tracks.

If you were on the trail that headed north (from 3N17 past the parking area) toward Placerita Canyon and turned to single track, that one looks like a hiking trail on the Tom Harrison map, but the fireroads were legal according to the map -- and lack of gates or signs.

Has anyone checked out the fire roads/trails around Kagel Mountain Rd? I went up there a couple years ago with a friend who showed me a launching area for a hang gliding club; they said they meet there most weekends and own a grassy place to land in the foothills below . . .

What an awesome video! Nice filming and riding--the camera didn't even make a quick tilt and drop to a ground-level shot

Happy Holidays

This may be the saddest Christmas for me, but overall 2008 is one of the best years I had. Lots of riding, seen different, near and far places, lots of laughter, and above all made a number of friends.

Wish you all FFs Happy Holidays, be safe and get ready for more riding next year.

To those who lurks, please don't be shy, we're all easy going guys and welcome everyone to come and join our rides. nOOb or experienced...we treat them all the same........

Have a Happy New Year too!
