Stuff to do this weekend.....................

1. I found a KTM triple clamp to use this weekend to see if it will work. I should be able to figure out the stem and bearings as well.

2. I realized that the Vstrom wheel uses a 525 chain whereas the Ninja has a 520 . So, after a little research I found that a 520 conversion sprocket is available for Gixxers and will bolt up to the Vstrom wheel. Pick it up tonight from Marshalls. Over the weekend I hope to machine the rear wheel rotor boss a little to narrow the width. I also need to machine the Vstrom spacers down a little and make a bracket for the caliper.

Things are slowly progressing.

By the way, I found a little trick last night. The front axle on the Ninja takes a 14mm allen wrench. Who has one of them laying around? Ya, neither do I, and neither does Sears. So, I went to Home Depot and and bought a 3/8" threaded rod coupler (2 for $.81). It's 9/16" hex on the outside and about 1.5" long. I stuck it in the hole, put a long handled ratchet on it and blamo, loosey goosey, good to go

Borrowed a set of KTM triples this weekend to try. Looks like I can make them work but the Vstrom front wheel didn't show up yet so I have to wait for that to see if the width is going to be ok. I just threw a 17" front wheel in there for the pic.

Forks shortened 2" for mockup with nylon straps. Note, it's suspended up in the air right now. Will actually sit much differently when all set up and sitting on the ground.

TonyMorr,

Got a look at a new wee-strom today at the dealer and the ninja 650r which has the same front wheel as the Versys (I have a Versys).

Looks to me like the 19" wee-strom front wheel is like .200" more narrow at the discs (measured with my hand, not a mike) and the bolt pattern is no good, but who cares, we knew that a hub would have to be machined. It would be nice if the wee's discs were 300mm instead of 310mm, then would only have to add spacers on each side. Must be turned unless there is 5mm slack in the calipers on the Versys, hmmm.

Now, I don't know what obstacles lie ahead in the axle and bearings.

Wish I could get my hands on a used wheel to measure and check tho.

I have a Vstom 1000 wheel on the way. I'll make some comparisons to the Ninja wheel when it arrives.

Cool, I will be watching. I just checked the specs on both bikes on the web, both the 650 and 1000 V-strom have a 310mm disc, could turn them to 300mm, add spacers, bingo, fit the versys. Looks when the discs are turned to 300mm some lightening holes will be cut into, so might need to hand mill some scallops (home made pedals). Appears to be enough discs for the brake pads after machineing.

Only thing, the Versys discs are prettier, v-strom are just round.

The axle appears to be same size as Versys (18 mm), got to get my little grubby hands on a wheel soon!
