is this road likely to be open in early May, I've heard that it snows a little

if it is open would you advise riding it on a GS 1150

cheers

Transfagarasan is open on it's whole lenght only from june. On the transylvanian (Sibiu) side, you can find a lot of falling rocks, and between Balea Cascada and Balea Lac it's usual to find high amounts of snow in the curves. So, even if you pass by the rocks, in that curves, filled with snow, you need an Unimog. The Arges side is ok even in May, you could arrive even to the tunnel (the border between Arges and Sibiu county) and to Balea Lac. So, if you want to see the whole beauty, you should wait until mid June. In mid June 2005 i was at Balea Lac for snowboarding, and from the Sibiu side, the road was still closed, i had to take the cable lift from Balea Cascada to Balea Lac.

all the best!

About the Transfagarasan road: I can say just what I saw. In 2007 I was there on 2nd of Jun...(from the side of Sibiu), the road was closed (but I couldn't read Romanian he he). Anyway we dribe almost to the tunnel, the road was like-cleaned, and about 1 or 2 kilometers before the tunnel we had more then 3 meters (10 feets) of snow and ice wall's, and ice on the road. We had to turn back.

We made the same route from the side of Curtea de Arges on last days of August with Siegfried and Black Dog, and few other people. We had the most beautifull day we could ask. One guy was just one day behind us and the next day he could see just few feets infront of the bike. He said it was a struggle to pass those 150km of curves in fog and rain.

Just 2 or 3 days after we passed the it was snow on the Transfagarasan, the road was closed and rescue was searching for few tourists in the mountain who was trapped in few feets of snow.

So the best time to go there is July and August, that is the only reasnoble window to make that route, but it is worthed to go there!!!

Here is one picture from Jun of 2007:

This is September 1st (the marked place is where the first picture was taken just 2 months before):

Just few days after this snow was almost like on the first picture

we will be coming up from Veliko Tarnovo in bulgaria, which is due south of you.

what is the best way to get to you from Veliko as all roads seem to go to Bucharest

if we cross the border at zimnicea and head up to Alexandria, Rosiori, can we take the 65a up to Pitesti ?
from there route 73 looks favourable

I'll pm you my email

I look forward to meeting you

cheers

Why?

The roads in romania are mainly very good. You will not have problem with that unless you are riding Hayabusa or somehing like that. I didn't took that road, but I was in that region one or two times and everything is OK. If that is not what you are concerned about that what?
