@ nerudarider

The best to enter Transfagarasan is from south side from Curtea de Arges, and exit on north on side of Sibiu. That way when you go to the top the view is amazing on hairpin's on descent and to the valey. And riding down on those hairpins is something amazing.

Anyway I was in Romania last weekend, and Transfagarasan is closed, and covered with snow. Here is one picture from valey to the mountains:

Believe me, before mid-Jun it will be impossible to pass that road! And then will also be some snow there. Also you will have to be very carefull on decent to side of Sibiu after hairpins, because as the snow melts, there will be few places with rocks on the road with barely small space to pass the road. Last year I was there in Jun and the road was also closed, but I rided almost to the top. Then we had to turn back because of wall of snow and ice.

We saw heavy machinery for cleaning the road from rocks and snow, and the cleaning is finished somewhere in beginning of July.

Thank you Quasaar for fresh information.

Now we have to think a bit what to do. Now it looks like we have to rearrange a bit our trip. Traveling dates are confirmed and what we could do just to turn to other way.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's just the Trans-Faragas pass that is closed - right?

I think you easily can ride from Cluj Napoka to Brasov and then to Husi to enter Moldovia.

I was around the area in November one time and it was only ice in the nights.

Yes just the Transfagarasan road is closed. All other roads (even if it will snow, but it shouldn't) the roads will be clean and dry. Also as someone said the Transalpina pass can be also bad thing to try it now because the weather there is very unstable.

Anyway all other roads will be OK. Last weekend we traveled from Sibiu - Fagaras - Brasov. At 1 or 2 am in Fagaras the temerature was -4 celsius. It was a bit cold but with jacket and pants with inside layers was OK.

You can ride all Romania without problem just the Transfagarasan road is closed until mid june!

For those who will wait for a bit better weather for Romanian mountains... beside Transfagarasan is also one very nice road to ride... from Petrosani to Brezoi. It is not a road with hairpins, but those 150km are great nature with lot of curves!

another one from Romania

Hi all, I'm living in Brasov.
I currently own a small thumper and a cruiser, but am thinking seriously about adding a larger touring bike

Salut!

Nice idea for the ride, both countries have lot to offer for a traveler. For more details, it would be best to ask on the link :

I really love romania, the roads/scenery are probably my favorite in europe. My 1st time there in 04 it was like going back in time. Now with the EU, it seems to have changed a bit, not as many gypsy carts, (and they all wear reflective vests now?) & less girls waving along the roads
I'll be back this year, wanna ride the Transfagarasan pass on my Indian.
I'll be in Bulgaria all summer, heading over this weekend (may fly into bucharest, as my delta 'buddy pass' wont get me to sofia)I bought a place & opening a bike hotel/cafe near Sevlievo, but will come to RO several times I am sure.
Hope to meet some of ya'll then.

Doug
