BMW R1100S Question

So's I'm at the local Yamaha/Honda stealer today on my lunch break, and a guy pulls up on a silver R1100S. Afterwards, I see the dealer guys giving it the trade-in evaluation. I never got a chance to talk to the owner.

I looked the bike over, and I think it was an '03. Said "1003" on the frame plate. October, 2003? It had just 9000 miles on the clock, bag mounts but no bags on it, "carbon-fiber" fender and rear wheel hugger, and a tall aftermarket screen. Many small blemishes and some faded black plastic. Scratches on the fender and hugger. Looked a little rough but the tank was dent-free, and the paint and seat looked great.

So, what's something like that worth? This can't be right, is it? $7,360? No way!

With that low mileage, it should be trouble-free, yes? Or is there something (prolly alot) I don't know about this period in BMW quality control processes?

It is an outstanding bike. A problem free one. Many have many more miles on their 1100S. Price is within range. Rode one for five sweet, reliable years. Beautiful thing, too.

Still miss mine. You could ride the thing across the country and have a decently capable sporting motorcycle when you got there.

They like to be manhandled a bit, so if you're expecting sweetness and light and Japanese sportbike effort, this isn't it. Like most BMWs, it likes to be steered with the lower body, so pretend you're skiing and you'll have a ball.

Ohlins will transform one of those into something really special.

Brought home Tuesday a "new" pride and joy. Has 10K on the clock with Bags, and a Vandelinde pipe, Peg lowering kit, (for the old fat guy riding it.... ie ME) and throttlemeisters.

After the Demise of my '02 In December, I was missing the "S" so much, decided I needed to replace it.
Love the sound,looks, and feel of the boxer "sporty" ride.

To answer your question, $7000 for a '03 R1100S is a decent price.
I enjoyed the power in mine (had a powerchip and Staintune) but didn't like the ergos for longer trips.

That's pretty. You did the paint? I assume the Mamola sig is a sticker from the BCR?

Yes, price is reasonable. A good hangout for R11S types is bmwforums.net.

Ergonomics can be modified with peg lowering kits and RapidDog barbacks. I put an adjustable paralever arm on mine and twisted it to 1/2 way between the S and the GS lengths. Makes for an interesting alteration/improvement in street handling.

The S is a "love it or leave it" bike. Those of us who were hooked by whatever quality(s) of the machine generally keep the bikes. Mine is at 87K miles (though 75K by previous owner - waah!). I would rather rebuild the bike in 10-15 years than let it go. It means that much to me. For longer touring it is not the best bike. For canyon carving it is not the best bike. But for a combination of both, some dirt roads, suburbs, and cruising by all the posers, the S is quite close to the top (IMHO), certainly for modern bikes.

It turns heads of every age, and I've lip-read more than one teenie-bopper exclaim "it's a BMW!" when they see the roundel.

Unlike most other bikes, three or more S bikes running together is best described as "a flock of angry Messerschmidt's tearing down the road" (not my words). The sound is quite unique.

If the bike clicks, you will love it and tolerate its shortcomings. If it isn't "love at first sight" think about getting something else.

BMW Daytona did the paint, and yes the hackneyed sticker was from the BC bikes.

With the Staintune exhaust, it made a lovely sound....

It is the 1 BMW that I regret selling.

2004 Boxer Cup Prep - with the longer sport suspension, shorter torque arm, steering damper, and no ABS or heated grips.
Laser exhaust and a chip, luggage, t-meister... loved to cover miles on it. First of the dual spark motors, came out in May 2003.

Absolutely one of my all time favorite bikes - put 27,000 miles on it the first year.

I rented one in Milan ('04). I think I did about 2500mi (Italian west coast, Sardinia/Corsica).

I found it veeeeery sweet. Extremely flickable and the locatation of the exhausts make for spacuous hard bags.

Best all around bike I ever owned. As stated $7,000 is reasonable for a low mileage bike. They hold their value for a reason.

I have a new-to-me '03 BCR that I put 9K on last summer. Didn't have any issues doing a 2K mile weekend down the BRP. Not the fastest (or best handling) bike out there, but it carves curves pretty well. The stock seat leaves something to be desired though, I replaced mine with a Sargent.

It gets quite a few looks, and at stop-lights I always see people mouthing 'Randy...Momma'?
