Flush mount gas caps

I've had a spare Moto Guzzi T-3 gas tank in the garage for a while. It's in good shape except for a boogered gas cap fitting.

I would like to put a flush cap on instead:

It SEEMS obvious that you just get a holesaw and punch the appropriate sized hole in the top of the tank. Am I missing something? I think I'd rather have a couple of half-moon metal backup pieces on the inside of the tank with another gasket for additional support/sealing.

Anybody done it??

Thanks.

a single "back up plate" can be made and inserted inside and screws pass thru the face plate and screw into the backing. i don't have the puter skill to draw such a plate for you, at this time. basicly it'll be a big washer the size of the pictured crome peice. and threaded holes, matching the top. the trick is that the washer has a small notch cut into the outside edge if your tank is , lets say 1/8 thick, then the notch is made about 1/4 thick. and the notch is about a 1/2"deep. the notch is sliped onto the tank side, and the plate is rotated down and inside of the tank. once inside of the tank, it's sliped out of the tank/notch, and manuvered into final position held in place with a peice of solid wire run down one screw hole and back up another screw hole. this requires a hole to be drilled into the tank, slightly bigger that you'd need for the filler neck, but the rubber gasket covers the oversized hole just fine. i know this is rather hard to follow, if i have some free time tomorow, i'll copy a picture and try to post for you.

I had to read it a couple of times but I got it.

Thanks, when I get time I'll make some measurements and punch a hole.
