My guess from the way it sounds is that the mid range is a little rich...which is controlled by the needle in the carb. To lean out the mid range you want to lower the needle a notch. I'd check the manufacturers recomendation on oil/gas ratio and stick with it. Too little oil and you can trash the engine in a hurry. The problem is too much oil/gas total in the mid range, not too much oil. What have you changed since it ran like glass? Smoking after shutting it down is no big deal...the exhaust may have a llittle residual oil but that will clean out when you get the jetting corrected. On the good side if it idles and runs good with the throttle wide open, you have minor tuning issues to worry about and nothing major. Hope this helps.

yes Rob, it has the adjustable PV. haven't pulled it yet.

SR- the ktm owners handbook suggests 40-60:1 so.... yea

madhouse, I am worried about just that - I found a good suggestion on ktmtalk - I filled the tranny with exactly .7L of oil, so if I drain it, I should get back about .7L... if not...

All the advise is good and spot on...

IMHO or even IMEO - start with fresh compression. Ring (in the case of the 200) or piston and ring with new fresh bore and THEN start to refine carb exhaust etc. The KTM 200 will run with almost no compression...

If you know the compression is OK (can you push it through with your HAND? if so it aint shit) then I would look at gummed up exhaust First before other remedies. BTW I have repack kit that has never been opened.

The more I listen to the vid the more I think you are clogged up in the muffler...
who knows....

Ask Gimmie why a bad battery on a 2012 5 Hunny acts like a clogged filter!!!!

I never would have mixed it so lean if the KTM owners manual didn't call for it.

Also I second Mr Robert Dirt's prognosis of power valve cleaning time has arrived.

No need for wire brush, contact cleaner, & elbow grease. Bring me your power valve parts & I will bead blast them at work for free. You will think they are brand new from the nearest dealer This applies to any ADV member.....bead blasting, welding, etc. I can help, ask Skidmark

So true! With no valve train to breathe through, ring seal is EVERYTHING to a 2stroke. If you pull the jug off, put the ring in it and measure end gap. .003 per inch of bore is a good rule of thumb, I bet yours is fat.....

Can you brazen small holes on something like a dampner rod? I want to fix the front end on my XR but can't do a whole lot till I make that fix first.
