You dont quit riding when you get old, you get old when you quit riding.
I don't always ride street bikes, but when I do I prefer VStroms

trying that now...

BTW - do you have your Montana on a power mount? My charged batteries were down after about 4 hours with full backlight...So far I really like it. Moved over my TOPOs and all is well there.

GPS mounting info

Several guys have asked about the Montana and the mounts... RAM mounts are you answer. LOTS of options.

Here is my setup.

The first thing you need is a ball mount. Here is the best one since it saves handlebar space.

Here is another type. Bar mount.

Then you will need one of these… Small first then larger (for mirror)

You will also need backing for whatever mount you get… this is the diamond for the regular Non powered mount.

Final mounting for Montana – non powered set up.

My cockpit…

Hope this helps…

Vic, I use the same set-up as you on the DRZ and set the backlight for 2 minutes to save battery.
If I ever glance at it and its blank, a simple touch with a finger lights it up for another two minutes so I can get info.

NOW for the VStrom, Diann bought me this power mount for the Montana.

GPS stays awake all the time.
It's a hardware install and don't feel like moving it back and forth between the two bikes since the lithium battery life seems to approach 12 hours with the present way of use.

The stock battery last almost 8 and MUST be shimmed with tape or something for rough riding or else I notice it turning itself on and off hitting ruts ect.

I've been running my 60csx hardwired on my KTM and Vstrom. The batteries would lose connection and shut the unit down on bumpy trails.

Happened on my CSX 60 also.
Hardwiring definitely the way to go.
The cradle setup on the Montana is about 30 bucks I think and with the price of Lithium batteries, its a no brainier.
Might do it on the DRZ. ()

My Montana seems to like the three AA lithium batteries better than the stock battery.
They fit in really tight.
Stock battery doesn't.
A bit of shimming here and there fixed the stock battery but doesn't last as long as the lithiums can.

On a two day event, I'll start out with fresh set of lithiums and carry the charged stock battery along to change-out sometime on the second day.

First - yes they fixed the loose battery issue. The AAs fit very tight with a snap. And yes they do seem to last longer than the recharge.

I have about 10 rechargeable AAs that I keep hot and carry with me (not all at once of course).

I guess I need to use the back light timer and set it for two minutes. I have a problem with looking at the GPS too much... it will hurt me soon I know.

Anyway with hardwire mount coming I will see how that works...probably put it on the Hunny since I spend more time on that.

For street riding I think its hard to beat the iPhone on MapQuest with blue tooth to head set. I get up to date info and British Female voice directions!!!

Lots of fun playing with a new toy...

If any of you are thinking about getting one ---shop around for best price with NO shipping or tax = $469 or so for the 600.

OK Hutton on the 4th sounds good to me. I have some new stuff I want to tie in with older routes.

Hutton on 4 July

Rotorhead/VICO and anyone else that can join us...what time do you guys want to start?

Looks like rain but to me that just means that it won't be hot. I'll be there rain or shine.

While there are still a few days left which could somehow alter my forward projected list of events, I have prioritized Thursday morning as my official celebration of the date on which this fine country declared its independence by engaging in some freedom inspiring two wheeled action starting from the Hutton Unit at 7:30AM - with or without precipitation and I guess without regard to the temperature.

A one tank ride into the abyss and mystery of Blackwater State Park

Yall come now ya here ! Hell this is the way Epic Rides start...

From past experience 7:30 means wheels rolling about 8AM...

But remember at 7:15 I yell "15 minutes" and leave immediately.... Its an old BW tradition...

Be good to ride with you again.

BTW - just laid out a 65 mile loop from Hutton north to Bad Ass land and back. I can send GPX tracks if anyone is interested.

Hey guys. Just checking in, been a while since I've been on here. Talked to rotorhead at work the other day sounds like he has been getting out riding a bunch with you guys. I'm headed to the in laws for the long weekend but maybe can catch y'all for a ride when I get back. Happy 4th and be safe out there!
