Place to ride

Need some info help, I plan to be at Ft. Walton/ Destin area this summer and wanted to know if it's worth to pack my Adv Bike to down to the sun area.
I love riding dirt roads, fire roads and riding parks. I'm not a pavement pounder since my bike is a street legal CRF450X, but dont mind riding a few on the asphalt to get to the fun.

Just would like to know before I bring my bike,

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

No brainier, bring it. There is plenty of fun to be had with a plated bike. Check out I think its post #2 for the places we ride and requirements. There is also a single track park in Chipley called Hard Labor Creek for some pure ST fun.

Post up when you get here.

Question

Howdy fellers - long time no post up here. I have a question for you range experts...

Looks like the military has decided to share my mad Hurlburt Field skills with the Army 7th Special Forces Group up there near duke field. The army's installation is on the west side of hwy 85 directly across from duke field about 5 miles off the highway. So I'll be "working at a remote location" two days out of the week. This made me think - man that's a drag... having to drive almost up to crestview from FWB. But then the light came on in my head and I said to myself - Pete - just cut through the range! So I google mapped the shit out of it and it does look like there are range roads that could get me there without ever having to step foot on hwy 85.

Looks to be PERFECT fodder for me and the old transalp.

Heres the questions...Have any of you gone up there via range roads? Do any of you know if those roads are out of bounds or prohibited? I will be going to jackson guard this weekend to renew my pass, grabbamap, and drive on out the way I hope I can...

Any knowledge of this hopeful route would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ok 1st dumb question: You can ride in Eglin forest area with a permit?
If so how hard to get?
Can you off-road ride in backwater state park?

Sent from inside of my Man Cave to outer space then back to your space.

Yes you can ride the Eglin range anywhere that it is permitted as long as you have a range pass, and your vehicle is one that is registered and tagged (license plate). The process for getting said range pass is outlined (I believe up near the front of this thread) but long story short you need to go to the "Jackson Guard" in Niceville to pay your fees and get your map and permit. Google Jackson Guard Niceville and you'll find their "my first website" kind of website. I always buy the more expensive fishing permit because it is good for a full year from the time you bought it. More expensive meaning like 3 bucks or so... Bear in mind - you will have to subject yourself to a 5 minute video "training session" that covers the dangers of unexploded ordnance (uxo). Cool little building and layout though...

The Blackwater state forrest does not require an Eglin range permit. The maps of blackwater are available at a particular ranger station, and an old hardware store somewhere in milton. Specifics of which I am not sure.

Welcome to the PAR thread. This is the spot for dirt riding in NW Florida. We have lots of folks who ride all types of bike and rides. But what we have that NO ONE ELSE IN FL has is lots of legal woods riding.

Please refer to post #2 in this thread for specific info on types of rides and meeting places.

We are serious about ADV riding around here. We often field 30 riders for long distance dirt rides and ADV Fests.

By all means bring you Honda. Blackwater is fun and can be very challenging if you know where to go.

Eglin requires a 12 to 15 permit but has lots of riding and some things to see if you like crashed planes and helos tanks trucks towers bunkers etc...

Pete - Up Range Road to 213 and then right (that's East) to 215 then back left (west) to SF area. Never get near 85...

Before all that began I worked with the Corps of Engineers to lay that out and schedule the work. Use to ride out there in jeeps before it was developed.

There ARE short cuts off 213 you could take on you TA but I have not been that way in ages so who knows if you can get through now...

Most of that route is tarmac but 213 does turn into road clay... not sandy...

EXCELLENT! Thanks Vico! Looked to be mostly paved roads and some maintained clay roads. Looks great!

Fingers crossed. A PERFECT venue for the old Transalp and me!

If you like riding in the heat/humidity and sweating your butt off this time of year than your in luck...
All kidding aside there is plenty of riding down here as stated by the posts above. You will learn to ride in the sand real quick.. Fun stuff.

Finally closed on sale of my wife's previous residence yesterday (maintaining two and half residences "showroom ready" and mostly on the weekends for the last 4 1/2 months has been a bee-otch)! We're about 95% done getting settled in at the new place, really just trying to find some organization in garage/shop area--which has been the staging area for anything that did not know where it was supposed to go.

I am out in the Innerarity/Perdido area so I am farther from EVERYWHERE we ride ...

I am going to try to head over to the BMW place in about an hour or so, (10:30ish) and might even be up for a ride in the morning if it doesn't feel like 900 degrees at 6:00 a.m. ... we have had some relatively cool mornings this past week--could happen!

Sand Riding

IMO the secret to riding sand is to go fast/gas it. When you go fast you stay on top of the sand and have some control...when you let off or hit the brakes you get down into the sand and all bets are off. Sounds a little scary at first but when in doubt, GAS IT!
