70-75, I'll try to get a 60 miler planned. So far I think the range will be open where I plan to go. May have to get creative to get to the Helo.

Don't worry about speed. This will be my second ride as lead and the first attempt was a wreck.

My focus will be the route with speed a close second.

Let me know if you have any questions or want the tracks. I'd like an 8am roll out due to heat if that works for everyone.

I'll need directions to the starting point and a map in google would be cool so I can look at it on my iPad unless there is something else on my iPad I can download I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to tracks and maps etc. I just use my Tom Tom and say get me home! :)
Like I said before I'm hoping to be good this year and Ms Santa brings me a new gps toy!:)

Sent from inside of my Man Cave to outer space then back to your space.

Directions for Sunday

RJ,

There are additional directions if you go to post #2 for all the places we meet.

For Sundays ride:

If you go to Mapquest and punch in Broxson, FL the little pointer is just south of the meeting point.

If you go to Google Maps, punch in "Nichols Lake Road and highway 87". If you go south on highway 87 from that intersection you cross the Yellow River (relatively long bridge)...as soon as you come off the bridge the meeting place is on the left. There may be boat trailers there as well as there is a boat launch under the bridge at the same place. If you are coming from the North get off of I-10 on exit 31 and head south. If you are coming from the south, get on Hwy-87 in Navarre and head North, you will go thru Eglin Air Force Base property which is void of houses and buildings and just before you hit the bridge, it is on the right. 14.4 miles from the intersection of Hwy 98/Hwy 87 in Navarre to the meeting location...according to MapQuest.

S - stands for ??? TETS Day 2

TETS Day 2

Michelin makes a great tire! The S12 is the go-to tire for the conditions we ride in, sand and mud with some clay mixed in. The "S" stands for SOFT!

It is not designed for North Georgia and North Carolina hard pack mixed with bowling ball sized rock gardens or miles of high speed asphalt!

I inspected my rear tire before leaving Florida and saw that it was toast but hey, who wants to mount fresh rubber only to sacrifice it to the MX Gods? I had no idea how fast the tire would disintegrate ...lol! In fact, after racing many seasons of enduros on S12's I never even knew they had wear marks!,,see photo...

After yesterday's ride, Robin convinced me that I should think about replacing the tire before it came apart so last night I googled MC shops and found the number for a local guy. I called him and shared my dilemma and he told me the great news that he happened to have a KTM himself and he had a used Michelin that he took off a customer's bike that still had a lot of meat left mounted for only $50! So a plan was set for early this morning to meet and get this party started..

I want to tell you guys that if your ever find yourself in Franklin NC and are in need of help with your bike call Mike Hampton at Ultimate Truck and GolfCar. Mike used to own a Maico / Kawi shop in Daytona and now he's a wrench in Gods country. Nice guy......! While the bike was on the stand I changed the oil and we were off to ride the TETS north of Franklin to Cherokee. 20 miles north we ran into another closed gate so we turned south towards Helen.

Mike is a smart guy, he let me show him how I mount a tire with both beads at once....!

Before we could leave, he wanted to show us his old photo album full of 1970's era pics of him with Team Maico, early Daytona SX shots and even photos of him racing and the obligatory wheelie shots. Just goes to show, we dirtbike guys are all cool!!

About three hours later we still hadn't made back to hwy 64 when suddenly my front tire went FLAT!!

We found a nice grassy area in the shade to get the job done. Robin made me a bike stand out of flat rocks and an old pressure plate while I removed the wheel. Within 40 minute we were back to riding.....thanks Robin!

Again the vistas and forest roads were unbelievably rich and we constantly were saying "wow, look at that" over the Scalas.

9 hours and 174 miles later we arrived in Helen, GA. If you haven't been here, Helen is like a little Apline village with every building boasting a pseudo - chalet facade. The finest in Bavarian kitsch!

The only bummer today......the House of Jerky was closed when we arrived!,!,

Pooped, tired, sore and thoroughly digging this ride.

Tomorrow we get to ride in the RAIN! This is adventure riding at its finest!
Rick

Frank, we were sending praise your way for the excellent shape that thing is in! It's a TRACTOR on these huge ascents! It is the perfect bike for this ride. Way better suited than my KTM (and you know how much we KTM owners hate to ever say that...lol)!!!

Funny, last year I learned that Barney's KLR was way better suited for this ride when we did a 1000 miles up here...

Oh, I know that has to hurt! It's just horses for courses.

I'm glad Robin is enjoying it. I hated to part w/ it and was glad to see it go to a local rider. My 'new to me' '94 DR350 should be here tomorrow and I'll be back in the D/S game.

Enjoy Helen. I haven't been there in about 15 years. Great riding in the area.

You guys ride safe and have fun!!

I know right? The worst part is all for nut'n did not see your post that you were not able to ride Sunday until all my hillbilly madness had already been posted. Did not mean to get you all worked up. Oh, and RJ you need not be alarmed by our foolish demeanor we only act this way because we are just not right.

SAND!!!!! Yeah!!!

My bike with fuel cell will get around 70 to 75 miles, unless I need to strap the saddle bags on for extra cells.

Enjoying the report Rick. Had lunch there with Rich a couple years ago, guess what he had.
