Glad you are back. I don't know of anyplace to rent a scoot.

Maybe one of the inmates has something.

What are you looking for?

Mechanical Assistance Available

Lets Make it Official

Several inmates have asked me to work on their bikes and I am happy to do that to help folks along. Many of you have been to my house for a valve adjustment or whatever and my thanks to you guys for the kind offerings in return.

But then there are those who are afraid to ask for my assistance for fear of imposing or taking advantage and I appreciate that too.

But Im pretty much retired now and have some time on my hands, and could use some gas money for my addiction. So if you need some wrenching and its something I feel comfortable with dont hesitate to ask and I wont hesitate to accept your thoughtful donation.

It is not my intention to compete with any shops but rather to help out fellow riders where I can. Oh yea, you can help/watch/learn with me and do it yourself next time.

PM me if you have any interest.

If yes, how difficult was it...I am more concerned about the lights than getting the tag (got that covered)?

Trying to decide whether to make my 250 SX street legal for riding Eglin/Blackwater or the other options would be to start with a XC/XC-W or just go EXC.

For those out there that don't bleed orange...from the factory the SX is a MX bike (no lights), the XC and XC-W are enduro bikes, the XC comes with no lights and a linkage rear suspension and the XC-W comes with a headlight, taillight, and no link rear suspension. The EXC is street legal off the showroom floor. Somebody correct me if I missed anything, I screwed this up the first time and said the XC had a headlight...from all the images I can find, it doesn't. If you see a "F" in the model designation anywhere it means it is a four stroke...if there isn't a "F" in the model designation then it is a two stroke. All the EXC's are four strokes regardless of the "F"...this is true for current and recent designations. Of course it will change about the time I get it figured out.
In Fla, whether a bike is street legal is determined by the MSO. If its MSO says "Off Highway" you ain't gonna make it street legal with Baja or similar kit. It is off road for its stay in Fla.

That ain't to say that you can't trick a local Tax Collector office -- who serve as agents fo the DMV -- but if you do, you'll always be at risk of the DMV putting two and two together and revoking your registration. And you are not entitled to a chapter 120 'point of entry' if they do.

The legality of the EXC's until and including 2007 was ambiguous b/c their MSO's generally did not address the issue of on or off highway use. In about 2008 the fed DOT hounded KTM and others into including on the MSO whether the bike was intended for on or off highway use, which actually means whether the bike conforms to a variety of fed DOT and EPA requirements of street bikes.

So: you can't say whether all EXC's are street legal. It depends on a variety of factors.

Re the Baja kit: In a rather lengthy face-to-face meeting with DMV officials, I learned that the Fla DMV will not confer street legality on a bike that carries the OHV designation on the MSO because they lack the testing facilities that would be required to determine whether the bike meets the fed DOT/EPA requirements. (which are adopted wholesale by Fla.) Lights or no lights. Again, Tax Collector offices, especially in rural counties, can be tricked.

The suggestion to sign on to KTM Talk is an excellent one. They're a cliquish group, but there is good info there.

Lastly, EXC's come in two and four stroke models.

Win / Win

Vic,
Congratulations on being pretty much retired. Your gracious offer sounds like a win/win for both our PAR family and you! I am one of those that you have helped before and you definitely have a great setup at your house to do it. The torque limiting clutch adjustment on my bike was the trick and I don't think I've kick started it ever since!

O.C.

Tagged bikes

Agree with Halmac!

I have determined that if it doesn't have a tag on it I wont buy it. Its simply too risky.

My solution is to buy a new EXC. The only time I ever go to a dealer is to buy a new EXC with a TAG. No worries from then on out.

Im getting to old not to have the best ride available. But hey that's just me!
