Thanks Lonestar for helping out tremendously, and heading out early to snag 3 campsites (2 maybe ok). I'll bring 10 gallons of water, 3 camp chairs, bottled water and refreshment, burger patties, charcoal, and some other essentials. I don't plan to do any cooking Friday evening though.

Edited: Added CJ to the list of pansy lovers.

In fact no off-road vehicle travel is permitted at all. We get to stay on the roads. The county roads (Soda Lake, Elkhorn, Elkhorn Grade, Panorama, and Simmler-San Diego Creek) are of course open to licensed vehicles, and all of the BLM roads are open to green sticker bikes (but they have to stay off the county roads and on the BLM roads).

There is a fun road that heads over the Caliente Mountains out of Selby Camp and goes down into the Russel Ranch oil fields on the Cuyama side but has no legal exit to 166, so you get to ride back over to Selby.

All the other roads that head over toward Cuyama and 166, end at the National Monument boundries and provide no access through the private property (mostly carrot farms) to Hwy 166.

I hope that makes sense.
Thanks Dennis, glad you cleared that up. Same to you Walt!

Honeybunz, I remember meeting you in Carrizo the last time when it was pouring....anyway, we'll keep our eyes and ears wide open for you. Have a safe trip and enjoy.

Things are iffy for me right now. If I make it it'll be Saturday morning. I'll head out right when I get off work and be up there around 9am. That's if I don't have to work Saturday. I got to be home by noon Sunday so I can go to rehearsal Sunday afternoon.

Hi h8chains,

I enjoyed that trip immensely. Especially, the evening campfire part.
Sitting in a vast prehistoric remoteness, gazing at shooting stars through the clear, cold windy night skies, warming yourself by a campfire, cooking meat on sticks, sharing tales of conquests and defeats.
Except for eatpastas LED flashlight, it was as primal as it gets.

Directions to Selby Camp

For those who still need directions

Assuming you're coming from L.A.

Go north on the 5FW
Exit 166 and go west towards Maricopa
Get gas in Maricopa
Go south on 166/33
Look for a tiny abandoned gas station on the right, it's the entrance to Soda Lake Rd.
Stay on Soda Lake Rd. and head west.

Selby Camp GPS Coordinates N35 07.699' W119 50.457'

Best yet check out link

See you tonight or in the morning.
