Back on Topic.

Do we have a starting time for a Saturday ride? I have a friend riding over from Tehachapi and we need to know when we should arrive at Selby to meet everyone. Maybe we could meet up with anyone motel-ing it in Taft and then head for Selby Camp.

And... is anyone planning on gasoline and lunch in Taft on Saturday? It makes a nice loop, but it would require a little pavement.
The plan is meet at Selby starting at 8AM, and leave around 9. If you get there early enough, we will have a complimentary breakfast for you, but you have to let me know today and so I can add more stuff to my groceries.

Good idea if we can eat at a local restaurant at lunchtime, and chance to get some gas too. Anyone who could not wake early enough or miss the group, you could hook up with us at lunch.

And for those unfamiliar with the area, and driving or riding for the day, like Dennis suggested.....try to meet at a place in Taft, say at a gas station.

We also need a head count, please let us know asap.

Thanks Dennis.

It sounds like if I score three large campsites that should be enough. Thoughts? I'll have a couple of extra chairs with me, a campfire toaster and a coffee pot. I don't ride anywhere W/O at least two cups of Joe. This is in addition to:

Also planning on bringing up the firepit and small grill, stove and propane. I believe in packing lite.

We have at least 7 riders this Sunday! Well we always say 9AM, but you know how it goes!

There are some trails southwest of Selby Camp that ends at Cuyama Highway (HW166). It looks like some of them are NF roads and switchbacks! Anyone been there before? Maybe worth checking it out!

There are no trails that are open for riding anywhere in the National Monument.

In fact no off-road vehicle travel is permitted at all. We get to stay on the roads. The county roads (Soda Lake, Elkhorn, Elkhorn Grade, Panorama, and Simmler-San Diego Creek) are of course open to licensed vehicles, and all of the BLM roads are open to green sticker bikes (but they have to stay off the county roads and on the BLM roads).

There is a fun road that heads over the Caliente Mountains out of Selby Camp and goes down into the Russel Ranch oil fields on the Cuyama side but has no legal exit to 166, so you get to ride back over to Selby.

All the other roads that head over toward Cuyama and 166, end at the National Monument boundries and provide no access through the private property (mostly carrot farms) to Hwy 166.

I hope that makes sense.

Just Passin' Thru

I'll be passin' thru Carrizo early Sat. A.M. on my way to Monterey.
I should enter via Soda Lake from Hwy 33 about 0830.
I will lay down a scent trail of chorizo flavored dust clouds for late rising FF's to enjoy.
If any ADV folks are on Soda Lake at that time, show me the sign so I know it's you.

Back up behind Lawson Spring, in the Padrone Cyn area (see the Carrizo pages link in my sig.) is a road that goes down the south side of the mtn. TOWARD 166, but it dead ends at the back side of a private ranch (Erro Ranch, I think). The route from Caliente Peak, behind Selby Camp, also does NOT go through. "Back in the day", you could ride from the plains area up through the Branch Mountain area and get out to 166 near Rock Front Ranch (BTDT).. but no more.
Edit: Whoops. Dennis beat me to it.
