RALLY COMP: New Metering Device Manages Safety & Compliance In Rally Races

FIM Rally Racer and Multi-Time BAJA Racing Champion Mike Johnson has released the first information about his new invention and will be debuting the Rally Comp device in the upcoming BAJA RALLY 2015. All racers will be using the new units free of charge. The unit scores the rally in real time and uses RF receivers to upload riders' data to the scoring tent upon arrivals at special stages and bivouacs. The unit works very similarly to ERTF devices at FIM Rallies and points racers to WPMs with an arrow while keeping tracks of WP's hit and missed and "speed zone" violations in real-time. Lost riders can "open" WPM's and the unit's arrow pointer will guide them toward the missed WP. A small alert buzzer signals riders when they've cleared a WP and also warns racers about speed-zone violations. Most importantly, RALLY COMP is a fully functioning ODO/SPEEDO/CAP REPEATER that uses the same basic footprint, mounting bolts and connector cables as traditional devices such as ICO and RNS. RALLY COMP is arriving this fall and should be publicly available early in 2016. The only information available at this time is here and on BAJA RALLY website.

ANNOUNCING RALLY COMP
New Device Adds Safety and Compliance Functions to BAJA RALLY

ENSENADA, BAJA CA, MEXICO-Bajarallymoto.com has released the first details of a brand new metering device to be used by racers participating in the 2015 BAJA RALLY here this September 28 –Oct 2. The first of its kind Rally Comp is an on board odometer, speedometer, compass built around a compliance and safety management resource. The “event management” tool is the brainchild of veteran Baja champion and FIM Rally racer Mike Johnson.

"It's a game changer."
-Erek Kudla, Director of Timing and Scoring

Rally Comp promises to open a new door for rally competition and training with the objective of attracting increasing numbers of participants. BAJA RALLY will be the first widely recognized rally event to deploy the Rally Comp devices, which are being provided to riders free of charge with their standard entry fees. Entrants in the BAJA RALLY have received RIDER BULLETIN 3.12 previously to prepare for the requirement to "make space" to install the units for the event.

At technical inspection day September 28, riders will be required to install Rally Comp, which has the same footprint and standardized connectors as traditional odometers (ICO), unit onto their navigation tower to be used as a primary or backup odometer. A small attached antenna and alert buzzer connect to Rally Comp, which is externally powered by the bikes battery or an external power source (for bikes without a battery)

KEY FEATURES:
Primarily, Rally Comp times the rider from start to finish of each special stage, tallies waypoints hit or missed, and calculates WP and speed penalties in real time. When riders approach preset “masked” (hidden from rider) waypoints, an arrow pointer on the larger screen guides the through the waypoint and automatically calibrates the Rally Comp’s odometer to the correct mileage. If a rider becomes misplaced from the course (ie: lost) they can push a button and unlock (open) the next waypoint so the Rally Comp pointer can show the direction back to the course. A significant time penalty will be logged in real time when this happens.

Upon finishing each day, the rider can see their gross and net adjusted times the instant they arrive from the stage. Simultaneously, Rally Comp sends the data to an RF (radio frequency) receiver to the scoring tent. The resulting benefit is BAJA RALLY can post provisional standings as each rider arrives.

Secondarily, Rally Comp is a GPS based 4-in-1 odo/speedo/cap repeater, clock that connects to standardized thumb switches, power and antenna connections.

As a third and critically important element, Rally Comp attaches to a small buzzer (horn) that is audible to the rider when they start and finish each stage, cross a waypoint or when speeding in speed zone.

The long term effect is Rally Comp’s application as an entry level training tool to fill the growing demand of rally hopefuls needing to take their first step. Johnson, 2-time BAJA RALLY finisher and the only American finisher in the 2014 DAKAR RALLY has been entrenched in the development of RALLY COMP for over 2 years.

Erek Kudla, BAJA RALLY Director and Chief of Timing & Scoring, oversees more than 25 race events per year and considered one of the most prolific arbiters of the sport.

“It’s a game changer”, explains Kudla, “Our team has run multiple days of testing in the US and Baja CA and looking forward to refining our process around Rally Comp. I think the racers will love it”. Kudla continued, “I could create an entire event just based around Rally Comp.”

“Mike (Johnson) has hit a grand slam with Rally Comp and his mission is worthy”, says BAJA RALLY Director & Chief of Competition Andy Grider, we’ve been collaborating with him since the last BAJA RALLY 2.0. Mike knows international rally and shares our values and vision for growing the sport, making it safer and more accessible and adding new riders.”

Rally Comp, which is due for public release in Winter 2015 will be a mandatory for every vehicle competing in the upcoming BAJA RALLY and the unit will be entirely furnished by Rally Comp in a collaborative “launch” of this groundbreaking technological safety advancement.

We owe a huge “thank you” to Rally Comp and Mike Johnson for choosing BAJA RALLY as the first rally event to deploy this breakthrough device”, Rally founder Scotty Breauxman concluded, “Our team is optimistic about the difference Rally Comp will make for the rider experience and overall safety of the event.”

BAJA RALLY is a multi-day, international rally raid for motorbikes and UTV taking place in the Mexican state of Baja CA each Fall. Sponsored and supported by Federal, State and Municipal governments, the BAJA RALLY is the future of eco-adventure tourism in Baja CA. More information at www.bajarallymoto.com or click HERE

So, we walk a fine line in Racing with commercial enterprises. Racers have sponsors. Events are for profit, and at the same time, Advrider has a "no commercial" policy.

I'm drawing the line here. Events can stay in Racing, even though an argument could be made against it. But the line has to be somewhere, and I think equipment that is or will be for sale belongs in vendors.

Any questions feel free to PM me.

Is Rally comp an actual devise that will be sold in public, much like RNS and ICO? If that is the case, how is it possible to make it mandatory in a race?

Thats a great question. The answer for now is that BAJA RALLY was chosen by Rally Comp to be the first rally to demonstrate its prowess and effectiveness. So the device is being provided to every entrant free of charge.

Going forward, if the Rally Comp works as brilliantly as it has in our several days of testing, BAJA RALLY will be mandating its use in the future. Our organization will absorb the cost and provide the units to the riders as part of their entry fees.

It has the ability to perform scoring duties, so a bit like an ERTF.

I realize it is still early days for this but it might be cool to see some more screen shots or video of the device. Very interesting indeed, especially if other organizations can get behind it as well.

How do you load a route/WPs into it? Just a gps file or is this proprietary? Thinking about it from a training perspective and non real event use.

Hi Scotty, do you actually have more photos of the device? May be on a tower or something so that we can see the physical thing on a bike?

Investing and providing them free of charge is really nice

Thanks,
D.

Sorry 640-
Nothing at present but perhaps a month before the event. Its really a big deal for us to have this opportunity and all the credit goes to Mike Johnson for all of it. I'll work on getting some more images released but cant promise anything super quick...

In our tests thus far we've had some really experienced rally and off road racers rave about the effects of RALLY COMP and its functionality.

Thanks for the reply Scotty. So, just to find a bit more about how this device will be integrated, is it similar to ERTF and the target is that? I am asking because, for example in some rallies there are no wp's. Just to understrand te benefit and the technology behind it. If that is the case (wp's only), may be it will push more organisers to use wp's as well, no?
I understand that the device has an on-board GPS. How is that will be dealt with larger rallies, such as Dakar? Or that is not on the plate yet .

Looking forward to seeing the new thing, it certainly helps people push technology and ideas forward

The Rally Comp performs similar functions as ERTF but is also a fully functional ODO-SPEEDO-CAP REPEATER
We have 3 pieces of info released so far

1) this post

2) the PRESS RELEASE from a week ago

3) BAJA RALLY Rider Bulletin 3.12

Some photos are 1-3 weeks away. Thanks for your patience. Mike Johnson has created something remarkable. We can't wait to deploy this device exactly 90 days from today at the BAJA RALLY 2015
