Had a fantastic 140 mile ride today. About 70 miles of dirt road. We don't get much snow here so I had to document it. A really cool finding today was the end of the pacific crest trail. It goes from Canada to Mexico. I stumbled across it on the secondary border roads. There is no better bike for tight twisty dirt roads and twisty pavement routes home. It does both so well!

I've hiked the first 60 miles of the PCT, awesome. Most of the time I wished I was riding it, but that's a big no-no! There are some good trails out in that area.

I see you are a local. You should join us for a ride one day. I think there is 100 miles of border road from imperial beach to jacumba. I'd like to link it all together one day.

An interesting test while doing this mod was, after tearing all the paper out of the frame, try blowing through it. Then try blowing through the correctly oiled UNI filter. In my opinion the paper filter was totally plugged.

So who else is doing similar mods? How many people found full grains of sand in the air box past the filter? Did I miss something and there is another place sand can get in?

So check this out, I'm glad I looked. When I got home from my ride I decided to check my air box for new dirt. I took apart my side cover, pulled the filter, and wtf? Giant grains of stains? Head scratch? After a thorough inspection I found a drain right below the filter. Remedy? I stuffed it full of UNI foam. Here are some pics. Anyone else have this dilemma?


The dirt pissing me off


Shined a flash light in the box to find the hole that's pissing me off.


The screen installed with grease, and hole filled with UNI air filter foam.


Filter greased and oiled.


The old filter frame to pin the foam in place. Ill clean up the edges more later. If you try this remember to leave the last 2 rows on each side. Or there will be nothing to pin the filter in with.

I have looked in the Service Manual, and what is illustrated in the book, isn't on my swing arm. Does someone have a photo graph of on, so I can see how the application is supposed to look? Any if any of you have suggestions or recommendations on the replacement - I'd appreciate that.

I used the original mounting points, so they should be accurate for a 1990 model.
The last pix is showing my new plate connected to the OEM bracket under the engine.

I've ridden the border road from the beach to the desert, most of it anyway. Used to be some better trails before they built up the fence around Otay.

Haha, cool! Duke 125 headlight I had one of these Dukes, for a while. Headlight was one of the few things that did not brake apart on that joke of a bike
What do you use as speedo now? Not the Duke one, Ill guess?

You mean this fence? Lol at one point it appeared as if we could ride right into Mexico. They sure keep the road nice. We did from Barrett junction to San ysidro today.

Happy to see that you enjoy my transformation
In fact it's not completed, i still have the finish (change front turn lights, found a duke wind screen...)
Here are some spécifics :
Cooling system coming from Yamaha 125, fan motor removed, i never heard it worked in my life
Speedometer coming from 125 Yamaha SR, I have changed the nx cable (too short)
Fuel tank : 250 XLR
Sorry for my english, it's exciting to speak to the whole world (et à la Bretagne)

In fact it's not really terminated, I have still some finishes to do.
Here are some informations:
Cooling system coming from Yamaha 125 tdr, speedometer from 125 sr fuel tank 250 xlr.
Fan motor is removed, I've never heard it running in my life.
I hope that you roughly understand me, it's exciting to speak about NX stories with the whole world (et avec la Bretagne !)
