Hey everyone, if you notice a question asked more than once in the thread PM me when you notice, and i'll add it to the
FAQ post #14
,
on the first page of this thread.

*added* cheapest online OEM parts places to date
*added* battery source link for Ebay
*fleshed* descriptions

Just send everyone to post #14 in the future...PM me as soon as you think of anything new to include.

This is different from the BikeMods link in post #1.
Links to certain owners pages will also be on the front page, as per request via PM to me.

Also, links to writeups, like changing fork oil will be in post #1, as i'm sure most of you know...

Like the rear shock change writeup i guess about ten of us can write in a week or two JOY!

Or if you have any suggestions, additions. deletions or rants....PM me as well..
Oh how I love thee rants

Thank you for the explanation. My wrench is not a torque wrench, so I will need to get one.
I will not be driving in mud at all, but I think the TW39, 40 make the most sense.

Thanks for all the help.
Photos coming soon.

Sprocket Torque?

Since there is not info in the manual regarding the sprocket, what torque should I use when replacing it?

Thanks

Hand Guards

I purchased some sweet new handle bars and hand guards both in Carbon fiber look. (Dipped in a tank like a camo shot gun)

They look KILLER!

Problem:
Hanguards hit the cowling before the triple trees engage the turn stop in both directions. I can put risers/spacers under the bar.

Any other options? New to Dirt & Dual Sports

My New Old Bike

This is my first bike.

1989 Honda NX 250, 22k Miles, fourth owner

Needs back tire and new chain and sprockets.

Many miles on it but seems to be in pretty good shape.

looks clean man.
Not much damage that I can see, pegs look straight, all controls look straight even the whole california carb collector package is in place. and a 89 comes with the luggage rack as standard equip.

I will post the torque values for you but they are in the manual, for all the fastners you just gotta look. Anyways welcome to the motorcycling world
this is a great bike to get started. Take it easy, ride smart, be safe and most importantly enjoy!

Thank you. Since it is my first bike, I don't really know the difference.

What are some ways to get the bike up on a stand?

Do I need a motorcycle jack like this one:

What about something like this:

Would a milk crate work?

There is so much new stuff to learn. Thanks for all the help!!!

How concerned should I be about the high mileage of this bike? How long do these bikes live?

I am cheap and used the 500 deg. High Gloss Paint (left over) on my NX250 header after my exhaust mods this summer. The pipe looked great even after heat cycling; however, after about 20 miles of test runs while dialing in the carb., the first 6" just turned to carbon and blew off in the wind. So off comes the pipe to be completly wire wheeled to bare metal, wiped with Prep-All, and repainted with VHT.
Sir I couldnt find any prep spray here I'll just use laquer thiner avaioding oil seals no primer and engine enamel... is that correct enamel paint since what I could find here are acrylic sprays..

Thanks.

I like 1 best and 2 second best. Whenever I get mine running correctly I'm going to do some painting as well. Probably a single color to make it easier.

Was this the one in Haymarket on Craigslist? I never called to ask about it because I knew I'd buy it. Can't control myself when it comes to cheap bikes.

One less NX

To make room for what next? ( that' what my wife says ) I sold the little NX125. Sold for $925.00It was fun, but wasn't meant for country owner. It needed to stay in town where it wouldn't have to worry about speed.
That little bike didn't have enough power to get out of it's own way.

You were so close! All you needed was a NX650 for the complete line at the Honderosa
Maybe you can just 'swap them out', the 125 for the 650?

I've been looking for a beatup then down, NX125, just so i could hang either a Lifan 200cc, or maybe even a CRF230F under the frame..
(If this is impossible, well, shows how much i've looked into it, never seen an actual NX125 in person)
