![]() Thanks for the belated welcome mate. Thread hijackings is excempted if your a fellow retard, Australia is a land of the Fair-go and freedom of speech so Rod go fuck yaself mate (LOL) My deafness is sensory nueral (nerve like yours which is middle ear where the cochlear is) and my natural mother had toxemia in the womb (seems to explain why i like to burn rubber) so i was whipped out way too early, Toxemia affects the unborns nervous system...Hearing went gradually further downhill after 9 years old so self taught to lipread in an adopted hearing family....Given hearing aids as a child but never really achieved anything except making muffled sounds just louder so gave up and sick of the headaches...improved technology with digital programing on newer aquired aids as a teenager helped a bit to sort out frequencies i missed but then as an apprentice tradeswoman. power tools, didgital printers and cutters just undid all that programing everytime i used them. Have'nt done anything about it since, now at 35 i am considering the cochlear implant...its simply an aid again but this time it filters the frequencies and vibrations through the skull above the ear and back from the temple...held on by a magnet that is surigicaly placed under the skin....it should open up a new world for me, it also may be a OHS issue as i can imagine fridge magnets and paperclips hurtling through the air towards me can't be all that bad if the garage fridge is full of piss tho? Yeah there is plenty of upsides mate...my mates always put me in a shared room with the loudest snorer when we are on interstate road trips, things that go bump in the night DON'T go bump in the night, Triumphs i do like to tyre kick occasionally but they still sound like shit i can see it rise and blacken the cieling!Anyways the much loved Ducati has to go to pay for the op so its like losing a leg for an ear.....which is why ive just gotten into this site..the 640 tis staying and you dudes and dudettes gotta show me what its all about Thumpstress screwed with this post 03-25-2008 at 04:20 AM |

thanks thumpstress. i guess i should dig up more info on cochlear. my ent said my problem was inner ear and he cannot fix that except to keep uppng the hearing aids. i don't currently use one at all which means i miss lots but i'm mostly happy for that (had tag and trev here a few nights ago - couldn't hear a word tag said so hopefully i answered vaguely the right questions) it does get to be a problem when dealing with clients and bloody neighbours trying to stiuck their horses into my paddocks... if i remember correctly 8 yrs ago i couldn't hear anything below about 65db and its got worse the biggest downside i find is that i spend so much time working out what people are saying (as in putting together their words i do hear, body language etc) that quite often my responses are delayed if indeed appropriate at all. I should imagine if you rely upon lipreading that problem is perhaps worse. most people who don't know me think I'm either rude or arrogant for not answering them when mostly if i don't see them speaking at me i just do not hear them. and i'm probably rude and arrogant regardless of course! if your hearing is so affected what then is your speach like? apparently I speak very quietly but I cannot gauge if i am shouting or not. put a pair of ear muffs on me and i speak very loudly supposedly. or you could just take rod's approach to answer me if i'm being too personal.

![]() Being a Signwriter its hilarious, I can be busy erecting a sign or painting away with my back to people and 5 minutes later i turn around to see the disgusted look on peoples faces..its such a hidden impairment... generally i apologise or throw a sheepish grin to charm em over ![]() Yep, we can still hear sounds we just can't hear EVERY single word or at least the beginning letter of a word so its up to us to connect the jigsaw puzzle of words into a clear sentence in a quiksilver moment. This is where my bike mates master the art of finger spelling..a simple sign of the first letter goes a hell of a long way...i can teach people within 10 mins the entire alphabet and everyones happy and albeit a bit proud that they have mastered a new language in seconds...PLUS another bonus is we have conversations easy with our helmets on and motors in full song. For example they point to the nearest pub, motion the good old beer swig hand gesture and make the hand sign of a call - meaning "This pub is your shout" Then i sign "Pull your head out of your arse mate, and I'll have a top shelf pick for your stuffup!" Very easy really ![]() Yeah i used to worry as a child about understanding others, even now i avoid big group conversations, but thats whats lifes all about, getting out of your comfort zone...and helping others which helps you. Still its my nature to sit back and observe- safe way to perv is'nt it ![]() Sorry my stuff up, yes its the inner ear not the middle ear....all up to make people aware its simply the wiring from the brain to the ear is cut, nerves are dead..the cochlear helps reconnect and actually may stimulate growth again but thats far ahead in the future..but thats their aim... Sorry about this dribble....but bike sites generally are about bench racing ey?

thank you - it can be a bit of a bugger not hearing much but it also has lots of upsides.
group situations are appalling esp with lots of bckground noise. i find venues with lots of hard surfaces just too hard to hear anything in. oh well back to bikes. why did you chose the sm to use for dirt?

and ummm..no- we did'nt see a GS either, we've been too busy hiking up Mt. Chook Warble. The 640 SM was primarily for the twistys enroute to work daily and to keep costs down on the 996 (I still rate passion over price tho!) plus i live on a dirt road and the 996 crankcase takes a beating. A few mates got me into the dirtys 7 months ago, unreal weekend stints on whatever they would graciously loan me, Husky 510, Katoom 450,525 and 625s, Xr 400....was told to get a 250 but selective deafness can be a vice and I prefer tourquey bigbores over whiney 2strokes or 250s that shit themselves on long runs. Started saving up for a bulletproof xr400 but got impatient and thought bugger this I'll make do with what I've got and what I love. And Yes the MX crew are still pissing themselves laughing everytime i pick up the 150kilo pumpkin on singletrack Erzberg setups but my baby tractors up in the end even if Ive shit my brains out of my arsecheeks and my 1 finger salute ia a tad black and bent. Though this is not the intended use (or abuse), it's the high speeds i crave and the slides under the tuition of my fella KASUYAHO (dipstick rides a Honda though!) and Turton on multiple day runs and the midweight 640 fits the bill nicely. A fair bit of money went in to modify (nobody wanted to know, nor DID know how to do it - total grey matter for them or blonde job for me) but Never say Never.. the big front caliper got an inside shave and the lacework was a new template for John Titman...requiring 3 goes to get the angle right- full credit to him, he is a perfectionist and a top craftsman. The forksprings stayed (bit too short but will suffice) shimstacks changed and holes are larger, Shock changed and after Tekniks work my kidneys feel better and my bumring has retracted Next up is to lose the ugly bum tank and change to a 27 litre..the seat will have to be modified or a new one bought only because the minimal front tank shape ends protrude..maybe i should do the butcher chop? Whilst i am at this Mills and Boon warble can someone please help or direct me to a WORKSHOP manual that could be downloaded for an 04 Lc640 SM or Enduro? Would be much appreciated. Sooo Mouse whats brought you to your choice of ride? and Rod...or should we be starting a new thread here before i acheive a free Botox fat lip job? Cheers
